Just got done doing a fluid/filter change on the mother in law's 2001 Explorer with 175K on the factory fill.

Suprisingly, the fluid was relatively clean and the inside of the pan was far cleaner than I expected. The magnet only had a tiny amount of metal stuck to it. Refill was with Maxlife Dex/Merc.

Did the transfer case too, which was also the factory fill. That stuff came out about as black as drain oil from a diesel. Maxlife Dex/Merc went in here too.

2008 Odyssey 45,000 miles

Z-1 out

DW-1 in

3x drain and fill. Last 3x drain and fill at 25,000 miles. Z-1 coming out looked fine. Small amount of fine metal sludge on magnetic drain plug. Haven't noticed any shifting difference.

2011 Fusion 23,500 miles:

Out: 6 quarts of Mercon LV and a little LGR

In: 4 quarts of Redline D6, 1 quart of Maxlife ATF

I think the trans was a little overfull initially, which is why 1 less quart went in than came out.

1996 Toyota Corolla DX 1.6 5 speed 136,450 miles
OUT: ? Probably not FF. The drain/refill plugs were burred
IN: Advanced Auto branded synthetic 75W-90 gear lube
NOTE: Greatly improved sound according to the vehicle's owner

Fluid still looks good , but--

5qts drained, via a Mityvac 7400

In- 5qts. Redline D4 ATF

I do a 5qt drain & fill about every 5000 miles...= roughly twice a year.

Nightmare....... two questions. First is how do you like the Mityvac 7400? I would like one but have heard stories of leaks happening around the pump handle. I'm also looking at the 7201. Second... twice a year ATF drain and fill? Might that be overkill? Just wondering if once every year would be more than plenty.

1968 Buick Electra. 157k miles on the original ST400 transmission.
11 qts total Dexron VI using home fluid exchange method.

The pan had about 3/16" of gunk at the bottom and the fluid was dark but not stinky. On cold morning the transmission had an almost powerglidelike whine on startup but since new fluid and filter the sound is gone.

I use synthetic oil, and ATF. I haven't experienced any air leaks, or if there is one , it sure hasn't affected the suction. You will hear/feel air when you first start pumping, then when the vacuum process takes place, you just sit back. Works better on the atf drain vs the oil, but that could be the design of my car.

Is it overkill for the average person to do a drain & fill every 5000 miles? Maybe so. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus, 70,000 miles. Most all of my miles are city driven , short trips.
Taurus's weak point are the tranny, however if you keep clean fluid, then 150k-200k is not out of the question.

Twice a year i do a drain, but this last time I noticed the fluid was still cherry red. Will probably back off to once a year. I used reg Mercon V until I had a clean tranny, then the last 3 times I have used Mobil1, Amsoil, and this time Redline.

The 7400 model has given me zero problems in the 2 years i have had it, and we are talking about 7 oil changes and 6 tranny drain & fills.

Thanks for the info!
I am still trying to decide which one to get.
Two of my four vehicles don't have tranny drain plugs
and the mityvacs looks so easy to use. Have you ever tried
to suck the coolant out of the radiator with that thing?
Thanks,

JP

I have used it to suck out the power steering fluid, took about 20 seconds. I have not used it on my radiator, basically because of my design of the radiator, plus I have a iron block, so I had it flushed & filled @ the dealer.

Also i have never taken my mityvac apart, as some do. I have never even cleaned it. I turn it upside down and drain it the best I can. Also when it gets cold, around 40degrees, my vac is stored in the house, along with the hoses. I just put the hoses in a large trash bag, and the vac is stored in the original box.

I am guessing that people who have problems may let their vac get cold/freezing temps, or when they take it apart, the torque of the screws could be off, etc.- when putting it back together. And I have used nothing but synthetic fluids, and no problems with seals.

2004 Lincoln Town car--71,148 miles. Removed and cleaned pan and magnet. Replaced filter and 8 qts of Mercon V. No drain plug on torque converter. There was one on my '97.

I guess I never posted in this thread.

My Hyundai got a partial change with Valvoline Max Life ATF around September. Shifts really nice now and I'm glad I did it.

17k miles: Motul Gear 300

57k miles: Redline 75W90 NS

I only changed it yesterday, but the cold-shifting crunchiness seems to have been mostly taken care of. Only time will tell if any gains are to be had.

FWIW, there wasn't much of a change in shifting between the factory fill and the extremely expensive Motul.

91 Accord 5-Speed 53000 Miles 2 Qts Honda (IDEMITSU) MTF. The shifting was starting to feel knotchy in the cold. Smoothed it right up. I change the MTF every 3rd oil change.

2004 Trailblazer. 131,000 miles.

Mityvac out 3 1/2 qts. Replaced with Maxlife ATF.
Drove several miles and spent some time going into reverse as well.

Repeated the above process.

So far shifts great!

2000 Buick Century, pan drop filter change, refill with MaxLife. Drive, extract via fill tube, refill, repeat 3 times. Exchange a total of 3 gallons, refilling with ML. Add LG Red and I'm GTG.
