OCI: 2000 miles

Oil light started flickering last week. Oil checked; level was right at F on the stick. Took 'er in to the dealer. Pressure sensor and sending units tested and found OK. Oil pressure was tested and found to be right on spec. No leaks were found anywhere. Had them change the oil and filter just in case.

This is the third time I've had this issue, and it's been exclusively with SOPUS products: Platinum Ultra 10W30, Platinum Euro 5W30, and QS Full Synthetic 5W20 have all given me a blinking oil light. Notably, the Ultra did this while using a Hyundai/Kia OEM filter.

Will be sticking with Mobil oils going forward.

FWIW, oil consumption continues to improve and is now down to a quart every 3620 miles.
What triggers the light to flicker? Any details from others at other forums?

Wife’s 13 Fusion 2.0 ecoboost. 195k mi. Only 5k on this oci as were selling it to her nephew for his first car. Just a couple weeks ago replaced front driver side axle & rear brakes. Also replaced tie rods, air filter & spark plugs. He should be good to go for a new driver.

Nephew, new driver. Search on me for StreetSurvival.org I have links to my google photos/videos from my kids. Highly recommended.

Usually it flickers at low RPM but sometimes does so at speed. Shutting the car off for about 10 minutes clears it up. I drove straight to my local oil change place and had the oil and filter changed ASAP when it happened using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum/OEM filter and Pennzoil Platinum Euro/HPZ37 fills.

In both of those instances, I couldn't find the exact same oil anywhere for top-ups and ended up adding something else. I added Motorcraft Full Synthetic to the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 10W30 and Mobil 1 Euro to the Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W30 and got the flickering oil light within 1000 miles.

With the Quaker State oil, it happened on the way to the dealership for an unrelated issue a week ago. I brought it to the service manager's attention; they gave the car the once-over, gave me the green light to keep driving it, and set up an follow- up appointment to change out the sending unit. In the ensuing week between appointments, the light gave one single blink and then never came on again. This fill was topped up with 10 ounces of the same Quaker State Full Synthetic oil.

However...they declined to do the service after testing it. Instead, they cleaned and tightened all the connectors in case it was a continuity issue. I wasn't too happy with the dealership service manager about that.

Some Google searching and checking the Kia Soul Forum suggest that it's either a bad sending unit, or a motor that's about to barf.

At any rate, it now has the specific oil (Mobil Super Synthetic 5W30) and OEM filter indicated in an engine-longevity TSB. The light has never came on running that particular oil and filter duo.

Not that I'm a proponent of sticking to recommended but what viscosity does the manual/cap call for? If it comes on again maybe change to that. Maybe have the oil pressure checked with gauge at a different dealer or independent shop to see what they say.

My kids old '04 CRV I think called for 5W-20. I think I was using 10w-30, maybe even thicker and it was conventional, not synthetic. Life happened, it was sort of spare vehicle and the oil went a couple thousand over when it should have. It triggered check engine light, and limp home because of the VVT. All the forum searches said change oil with proper viscosity and factory filter. I used some full synthetic probably Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum in 5W-20 and Honda filter. I cleared the code and all was well for the next couple years. I had the thicker conventional as we were using it while it had a heavy crankshaft seal leak before we fixed it.

My father-in-law followed maintenance minder 0W-20 on his Renegade, mostly dealer bulk. He was burning a lot at 82k he got CEL for oil pressure. Dealer did all the sensor check/replacement, wiring/connector clean, no help. Then they did an actual gauge oil pressure test followed by borescope showing scored cylinders. He had 2700 miles left on his extended warranty. It took them 9 months but he got a new motor. Jeep work order said they found warm oil pressure of 8 psi at idle, 20 psi at 3000 rpm. 160-165 compression but 20% leak down. Also listed significant scoring in cylinders 1,2,3.

His Jeep is now on 4k severe service schedule with me doing it.

He’ll be going to the new drivers course at Thunderhill like my son.

Will look into your videos as well
That looks like a great class doing the same type things as StreetSurvival. I like that it's at a track also. My son and his now wife did it at Consumer Reports car testing place. It's at the old Connecticut drag strip where they can also flood an area for hydroplaning.

If the oil light flickers at higher RPM then I highly doubt it's an actual low oil pressure situation. Has to be an intermittent electrical issue.
Thanks for chiming in. I've had the same notion; a couple of times on 9 February the light flickered while hitting a bump at 55 MPH. The flickering lamp was first observed 15,000 miles ago and has come back three times since, always in wintertime with the engine fully warmed up. Surely the engine would be damaged or worse by now had there been actual oiling issues.
