2008 Lexus LX570, 261,000 miles
Out: Supertech 5-30 20k synthetic: Oil was run 8k miles (no makeup oil added), OEM Toyota filter run approx. 17k miles-- looked good.

In: 5qts Supertech 5-30 20k synthetic, 2 qts. Kirkland Synthetic, Toyota OEM filter

Kirkland Synthetic is a GrpIII not "PAO 3".

It's a Group III synthetic, which is hydrocracked crude oil or could be GTL which is natural gas converted into a liquid through the Fischer–Tropsch process. PAO is Group IV.

That's what I was looking for! They are both the same group of oils, Kirkland and mobil 1. By far, I believe in lower interval oil changes over going 10 or 20k miles on a special oil. Just my opinion. I'm trying to catch the Tacoma every 5k miles, so when I do go over to 6k miles for one reason or another it's not really making a difference.

If I'm not mistaken, conventional oils are a lower Group number, semi synthetic (synthetic blend) are in the middle, and synthetic are a higher number correct? Thanks!

This would be comparable to Kirkland/Supertech not Mobil 1. Group 3 and Group 2 value based synthetic.

2011 Toyota Tacoma Sr5 w/ 4.0 V6 I just bought. 127k miles.

Used car lot, they said they change the oil on everything before selling. Bought at 127k miles. Changed at 130k because that's what the sticker said. Maybe they changed the oil? Probably not. Had a valvoline oil filter on it that was insanely tight! Just moved to a different state and didn't have a claw type oil filter wrench ready. Filter o ring was also dry!

Drained hot, & used wheel ramps.

Project farm did testing, Kirkland oil was great. Same as Mobil 1 if I recall especially If you change it every 5000 miles/ lower interval. I do plan to change it every 5k miles. It's a PAO 3 oil if I remember correctly. Will have to check! View attachment 288083View attachment 288084

Also meant to mention, car fax showed it got it's oil change every 8k miles at a toyota dealer for a few years at least. I was pretty shocked because I believe most people go every 10k miles instead or forget till they are way over that. I prefer 5 to 6k miles.

I am the fourth owner. No one really put a ton of miles on it. It was a spare vehicle I'd imagine or only used for towing/ hauling stuff.

Thanks for the information! Looks like I have some more research to do. I've seen that cheaper mobil full synthetic. Good thing is it is dexos certified as well.

I'll have to find the sources I was using for information and read further into it.

Group II is conventional and a blend would typically be some mix of II with III. A blend itself is not it's own group.

As far as Kirkland and Mobil 1 being the same, while the "vanilla" version of Mobil 1 probably just meets the same approvals/certs as the Kirkland on paper, ExxonMobil is a vertically integrated company that partially owns one of the four additive suppliers, while Kirkland oil is blended by Warren and is a more "generic" product where they simply purchase base oil from a company like ExxonMobil or BP, as well as a pre-packaged additive mix that is sold on the market as guaranteeing that it'll make for an API compliant oil when added to the base, and then they put the two together and bottle.

The Mobil 1 family of products feature an array of different oils, many of which exceed the minimum specs and hold much more stringent licenses, especially from European OEMs that demand an oil to pass tougher criteria. ExxonMobil is an innovator in the industry and puts out a very quality product. Nothing "wrong" with Kirkland, again, it'll be fine, but they aren't the same. You could probably get Mobil 1 ESP from Walmart for the same price or less as what you paid for the Kirkland at Costco and that would be definitively a "better" oil. Whether that matters or not, that's up for debate.

I would be very surprised to find out that Kirkland/Supertech used any GTL in their base oil blend. It’s more than likely just the cheapest group 3 they can find along with the cheapest additive package available that will still meet the specifications they need

But it did so well on PF’s oil luge and coffee pot on the griddle “tests”… how can this be?

My GFs mother’s 07 Lexus Rx350, 107k miles on suv, she says her last oil change was about 2 years ago at a local oil change place, she doesn’t drive much as everything including her kids/grand kids are no more then 10 miles away so maybe between 2000-2500 miles on this oci. The old oil looked and drained like a normal used oil.

Will be a super tech filter going forward, seems to have excellent build quality and very cheap price. Seems to idle smoother with the hdeo in it also.

And whoever at the Toyota dealership in Nebraska that did the oil change before I bought it needs to put down the impact. Thankfully I had a spare drain plug. Will need a new plastic oil filter cap next time I think.

Just bought car a couple weeks ago. Got a pretty good deal ($5500), hoping that buying at such a high mileage doesn’t haunt me. Will monitor the oil level and maybe switch the VRP if it makes sense.

Probably the last part. Some folks have had great success with R&P.

I believe the Hyundai engine received other cleaning benefits else where in the engine though . Soon I will begin my 1st OCI with R&P in a Hyundai 2.4L so I’ll see if I get reduced oil consumption after 4 runs with it (4K mile / 6 month OCI) .

I am happy to report that 1,500 miles into his oil change, no oil loss. Usually I will see a little movement by now. So, maybe, 4th OCI is the charm....
