I want that factory oil out asap. I’ve broken in 3 new engines here of late and changed early and glad I did. It took a few oil changes before I was happy with what drained. To each their own though.

When I got my UOA back from the factory fill in my Corvette, with 1100 miles on it, that oil already had thinned out to a 5w20 because it had 2% fuel in it. I’m sure glad that I got it out of there early.

Once an engine is broken in I don’t like to get rid of perfectly good oil before 6k but when the engine is new I feel like it’s time and money well spent to change the oil way sooner. You only have one opportunity to do an early change on the factory fill so it’s better to be safe than sorry

Agreed. My 18 and 21 weren’t bad, but I was getting some sort of grey sludge on my oil rag whenever I wiped the dipstick until I changed the oil the 2nd time on our 24. I usually do the 1st change @1k and then 5k. After that I just run it as usual. We changed oil on my nephews new truck and a sliver of metal literally drained out. His truck is well over 100k so it did no harm. But still.

One knows they're an addict, when I'm thinking in my mind, "sweet funnel!"

(Oddly I only have about 3 5qt jugs of oil in the garage, other than Euro stuff, maybe 3 there--used to have probably 16 all lined up against the wall, as with rebates I'd gain +4 per year).

Yeah the funnels are game changer. Awesome!

2016 Ford Fusion 2.0 ecoboost
5.7 qts Supertech 5w30 high mileage full synthetic, Supertech ST3614 oil filter. This run over the winter had less than 3,000 miles on it. On this car I prefer to do short intervals with inexpensive synthetics. Out of all the vehicles I've owned I think this car is the hardest on oil.

2018 Mazda 3 @ 107,000 miles. Initially 0W-20 while under warranty but switched to 5W-20 after expiration. Always use Motorcraft filters in all my cars Ford or not except my AMC. What went in is the same as what came out.

Why the switch from 0 to 5W?

Given occurrences like above, is it not reasonable to just include one or more oil changes as part of the manufacturing process?
Does the engine need time running -possibly to get hot- to flush out swarf?

Why the switch from 0 to 5W?

Simply stocking oil for several cars. All run in temps between 40-90F 10 1/2 months of the year with only a few weeks higher than 90F and a few between 34-40F. Fuel mileage negligible to me. Ends me having 5 gal. containers with 0.5 qts. of different oils left so I can now combine into one container. I've got 11 cars and there is at least 20 different 5 gal. units of oil here and a shelf of 30 filters. Just ordered seven more filters today.
