Post your latest oil change

2018 Kia Soul Plus 2.0 GDI
116,767 Miles
3,437 OCI

Out: Mobil Full Synthetic 5W30; Hyundai/Kia OEM filter
In: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 10W30; Hyundai/Kia OEM filter

Comments on last fill:
  • 2467 miles: Topped off with 24 oz Mobil FS 5W30. Oil on dipstick looked and smelled clean.
  • 2570 miles: Added 20 oz Techron to fuel tank and 8 oz of Rislone to engine oil
  • 2632 miles: Had PCV changed
  • 3191 miles: Oil now reeked of Techron and was starting to look sooty. Topped off with 8.9 oz of Rislone
  • 3420 miles: Car sounded oil-starved during warm up and could've taken 10 oz of oil to top off. Noted declining fuel economy as well as increasing oil consumption.
  • 3437 miles: Worried that the oil was shot and/or the filter was plugging up, I had 'em changed
Observed fuel economy, constant 55 MPH on my 42 mile test loop:
5W20 Mobil Super Synthetic Blend: 38.1 MPG
5W30 Mobil Full Synthetic: 36.3 MPG
10W30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum: 35.2 MPG

Not sure what happened here with the last fill. Did Rislone or Techron trash the oil, or does this motor just not get along with the Mobil Full Synthetic 5W30?

We'll see how it goes with the PUP. My last car, a 2011 Cruze Eco 1.4 turbo, ran its very best with Pennzoil Platinum.

1985 Mazda RX-7 12a rotary

In: 4.9 quarts of Meijer (Warren Distribution) 10W40 conventional, Motorcraft FL-810-A oil filter (AAP has the filter for a good price), new crush washer for the drain plug.

2019? Odyssey, 116K, unknown OCI
Out: almost 5 qts whatever and cheapie filter.
In: almost 5 qts M1 0w20, Fram XG7317

There are 3 push pins securing the plastic piece around the oil filter. 2 were missing and 1 was broke.
Tires all at 29 to 30 psi. I've seen worse...
Timing belt, plugs, tires, brakes need attention. But this van is white and is beautiful.
Belongs to neighbor's daughter; I've known her since she was little. School teacher and husband is PhD in business. 2 kids.

I've had nearly 100k miles driven over 6 years between a 2017 Sonata and 2019 Sportage, so this isn't advice in sharing, merely my experience.

Try Quaker State Ultimate Protection (ignore the mileage guarantee and stick with your OCI and just know you're getting a quality product for less than $25) or Valvoline Restore and Protect. The latter is a bit more expensive, but over a 3-5k mile OCI it's not that bad.

Ive been using for the last +7k miles and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I have strong evidence to support its reducing oil consumption in my Sportage too

Go to your nearest Carquest and buy a Carquest Premium filter instead. It will cost you less than the other two options and is a better filter too.

As far as the oil choice, check and see which one is on sale at Canadian Tire and go with that 😃

Using up the last old style bottles of RT6 0W40 I have, July 2015 packing date, I probably need to thin my hoard somewhat the almost 10 year old oil looked fine, not really any more sediment in the bottom that in any other Shell produced oil I've ever used regardless of age, but after seeing some of those 15-20 year old oils that LSjr took a look at I'm not really sure how long you should keep oil and use it before additives begin separating and moisture permeation through the plastic container becomes a concern in my attached garage in Indiana.

2010 Forte 2.0L with 4950 on the oil, 187k on the car.
Out - Fram XG9688 and 4.25 qts of Frankenbrew.
In - Kia/Hyundai factory rock catcher. 1qt HPL PCEO 5W-30, 3.25qts PP Euro L 5W-30.

2017 Accord 2.4L 6MT, 4612 on oil, 111k on motor.
Out - Fram XG7317 and 4qts of Frankenbrew.
In - Fram FE7317, 1qt HPL PCEO 5W-30 and 3.5qts PP Euro L 5W-30.
Had to add 1.25qts along the way and it was at point of needing another 1/2qt. Smaller capacity so 1/2 qt is just over 10% and if I waited until full qt it would be almost 25% so figured just change it.
