Getting ready to do an Oil Change for my friend, the car is a 2001 325i (BMW 3-Series Sedan, 2.5L I6) which is quite similar to my own.
His car has some noticeable varnish and I can see sludge in the drain pan and "to the sides of" the valvetrain (looking through a boroscope). His car has nearly identical mileage to mine, 151,575 (I have 148xxx), and was dealer-serviced for most of its life. After seeing how clean my car was, he asked me to "clean his engine", so brought the car over and we're getting ready to do the change.
Most likely the first fill will be:
Redline 5w30 or 0w30
Mann/Mahle (OE) or K&N Oil Filter (if on sale)
Unfortunately, it snowed today and I don't have the space in my garage at the moment, so it will have to wait a few days when it's supposed to warm up.
How's that sound to everyone? I just got a Gallon Jug of MMO, and while I've previously used it in the gas tank, I'm wondering if it might be of use for his car at maybe 1/2-2/3qt of MMO (~6.5qt sump)? I don't want to mess with the (excellent) Redline add-pak, so I figured I'd ask the experts!
GOALS:
- Clean engine slowly via Redline/RoyalPurple oils and frequent filter changes (short OCI's)
- Once clean, be able to extend OCI to 7.5k miles (80/20 hwy/city driving)
- Long term: have the car running for another 150k at least, although he'd like to hit 500k
Other Stuff:
- Running Redline SI-1 every 3k miles
- Running Chevron Techron Concentrate every 1.5k miles
- Uses Shell/Mobil/Chevron 93oct gasoline
- Recently helped him replace: coolant, PS fluid, trans/diff fluids, brake fluid, and other easy stuff (last 2k miles)
- Fuel Filter changed every 30k miles
- Air Filter (AFE ProDryS filter, AFE Stg1 Intake)
- Cabin Filter changed every 15k miles with OE "Charcoal" Filter
He's averaging 26.8mpg, 80% highway at 70-75mph, yet my 325i with similar modifications and miles is getting 31.2mpg with a similar driving pattern/route/speed/style... Hoping to increase that a bit as well, though who knows what variables are beyond control (well, I guess I "know", but point is there are plenty).
Thanks!
Sincerely,
nleksan
