Post Your Latest (Motorcycle) Oil Change!

I changed my engine oil about 500 miles ago with Castrol 20/50 wt oil, and a Harley filter. The oil says it can be used in Harleys. About a month ago, I had the local wrench remove the inner and outer primary to replace the seals which were leaking. He put Harleys primary and trans oil back in, as he only uses Harley products on the repairs he does. I normally don't use Harley oil because I feel it's overpriced for what it is.,,

So there's an oil filter and filter screens replaced each OCI, as well as new magnets with the filter screens? From the looks of that blister pack, that's what an OCI entails. WTH happened to a filter each OCI and a magnetic drain plug that lasts a lifetime?

No there are magnets and screens on the plug that can be cleaned and new O-rings can be applied, which has been done 5 times. I replaced the magnets and screens this go round since the bike has 10k miles on it and they are composite. Kept the factory set as a spare set.

2016 XSR900 50th Anniversary model. Short OCI at ~2K miles, so just did an oil change and left the OG Ultra XG7317 oil filter intact. Filled with Castrol "Power 1" 4T 10W-40 full synthetic. That's what was also drained. Shifting seemed to start to get a little notchy already. The new Castrol fill did improve shifting. One thing I noticed with the Castrol Power 1 is that it foams more (can see it on top of the oil level in the sight glass) than the Valvoline conventional 10W-40 motorcycle oil I've also ran in this bike.

Going to try Valvoline 10W-40 full synthetic motorcycle oil next time ... 6-pack already bought on Amazon. Gold Plug magnetic drain plug picked up some ferrous "black sludge" as I call it. Probably mostly transmission gear wear, super fine ferrous particulate. Not as much as last oil change.

I hope the foaming is just a fluke. I scored a dozen quarts of that Castrol "Power 1" full synthetic for $4 a quart on Craigslist. That's cheaper than what I pay for Rotella T5 10w30. I was thinking I could mix it 50-50 with the Rotella for my 2014 CB1100.

I'm on my second year with the T5 10w30 doing 4k OCI's, and I have no complaints. The T5 doesn't seem to foam, and usually comes out still viscous and slightly opaque even after 4k miles.

Since the CB1100 is air cooled, I'm thinking a stiffer oil should provide more protection, but apparently the CB1100 oil cooler works best with 10w30, which is what it's spec'd for.

I assumed that the Castrol full syn 4T would hold up at least as well as the synthetic mix T5, but maybe that's why the guy was selling it? We'll see... Thanks for sharing your experience.

That bike looks suspiciously clean. Are you actually riding it?

😁

BTW, I'm wearing the helmet you need to be wearing on that. Arai Corsair X Kenny Roberts replica.

It's not a flat track bike ... need some different tires for that. Maybe next year, lol. It's actually got a lot of dead bugs on the front end, and the black wheels (especially the rear) are very dirty/dusty ... they need a good cleaning. 😄

The first run of Castrol Power 1 also showed the same slight foaming. It looks like a small layer of foam on the top of the oil level in the sight glass while the bike is running. The oil below that looks solid without bubbles in it, so I don't think the oil going through the system is foamed up. Maybe the XSR engine makes oil more sensitive to foaming - ??. I've only ran the Castrol Power 1 in this bike, so have no other data point.

Correction: Oil filter is the same as the V-Twin powered Spyders. The inline three models use a similar but different filter.

October is my annual oil change on both bikes.
2016 Suzuki TU250X Out: 10W-40 Smitty’s Super S motorcycle oil, Hi Flo filter. In: Same Brand oil and Filter.
2022 Royal Enfield INT 650 Out: 20W-50 Walmart Synthetic motorcycle oil. In: 20W-50 Smitty’s Super S motorcycle oil and ECOGARD car oil filter.
Both Walmart moto oil and Smitty’s moto oils shift smoothly in both bikes.

Short OCI this time at only 421 miles. I’m wanting to ride it in the Spring with fresh fluids all around (I’ve already flushed the coolant and brake fluid), and it has such a minuscule oil capacity that why not? It’s only 0.8 quarts for some warm fuzzies.

I experimented with using a fluid extractor on this scoot, and I’m pretty happy with the results. Just to check, I unscrewed the drain plug and hardly anything came out. The Gold Plug I bought seems to have caught a small amount of metallic debris, so it’s certainly doing its job.

Also changed the final drive oil for the first time, giving it the same Mobil 1 EP 10W-30 that the crankcase received.

2023 Yamaha Super Tenere ES with 16,000 miles. Oil and filter change with 5w40 synthetic Rotella T6 and a HiFloFiltro HF204 RC oil filter. Plus, the final drive fluid was drained and filled with Valvoline full synthetic 75-90 gear lube. The shift lever pivot was cleaned and greased with Bel Ray full synthetic waterproof grease. I'm good for another 4000 miles or until the tires need replaced.
