Post your latest differential oil/transfer case change

Wife’s 2020 traverse awd. 50k miles on the car. Transfer case and rear differential.

Out: factory fill
In: Valvoline synthetic 75w-90

24’ Silverado 2500 HD

Rear diff was about a a qt low from the factory (typical of current gen hd’s) when I checked during my first service at 1000 miles. Added mystik synthetic to bring it to specified level. Truck currently has 7200 miles.

Out: factory fill/ mystic mix
In: valvoline 75w-90 synthetic

100K miles so decided to do my front bevel box, rear differential, and Haldex unit. ~26K since last change but quite a bit of track days.

F. bevel box
Out: ~1qt Redline MT90
In: ~1 qt Redline MT90 + 1 tube of Liquimoly MoS2 for gears
Smells nasty and was dirty.
Used a new drain and fill plug. Drain plug is magnetic.

R. differential
Out: ~1qt Redline MT90
In: ~1 qt Redline MT90 + 1 tube of Liquimoly MoS2 for gears
Looked nice and clean.
Used a new drain and fill plug. Drain plug is magnetic.

Haldex clutch unit:
Out: ~1qt Febi/Bilstein Haldex fluid
In: ~1 qt Febi/Bilstein Haldex fluid
Already have a magnetic drain plug on this one so just replace crush washers. Clean the pump screen. Cycle pump using VW scan tool.

Everything including some other things (oil change kit for Atlas, rotor set screws, oil filter for Sportwagen) boxed up to send back to FCP Euro for refund credit with their Lifetime Replacement Guarantee (LRG)...about $185 worth; shipping will be about $20 using pirateship.

2011 BMW 535i X-Drive w/ ~123,000km

Rear diff:
  • Amsoil SVT out
  • Redline 75W90 in
  • 53,000km / 4.5y on fluid
Front diff:
  • BMW G2 out
  • Redline 75W90 in
  • 53,000km / 4.5y on fluid
Transfer case:
  • BMW DTF-1 out
  • TF0870 in (previous spec, but had it on hand)
  • 58,000km, 5y on fluid
  • reset VTG adaptations
Been thinking about doing these much earlier than I ended up doing them. Getting tool access to the plugs on the TC had been difficult, requiring a specialty tool. Access the front is always a bit of a pain, and there's no drain plug in the rear. Need to get a real/better fluid extractor and make sure I'm not trying to do this work in cold weather.

2008 Toyota Tundra in signature (Front Differential)

Out --- unknown dark gear oil with some residual on magnet...

In --- 1 gallon Valvoline Synpower 75W90 GL5 gear oil with new washers...

Delvac1 75w90 in a GM G80 locker. I actually changed it 5 years and 50,000 miles ago but it is my ‘most recent’ diff change. It’s been smooth and quiet since.

2014 Mercedes CLA250 4MATIC 129k

Out.... Liquid Moly 75w90 29k

In ....Lucas 75w90

darker than any gear oil I have chaged out recently even darker than the unknown oil that came out when we got the car at 100k new to us .....is this a common thing on Liqui Moly ??

Here is a sample of the clean Liqui Moly I had left over for a comparison

2019 QX60 AWD, did the rear differential last week, 500ml Mobil 1 75W90 put back in, very simple process. Yesterday did the transfer case, made a big mess trying to use a 200ml plastic Amazon syringe and plastic tubing to refill.

The Transfer case only holds 300ml. The syringe idea seemed so simple in my mind but when you're lying down with fresh oil dripping in your face and hair, I realized there are issues with trying to squeeze the syringe with slippy wet fingers. Used up about 75% of a roll of paper towels and a can of brake clean for the garage floor. Spilt about 200ml of Mobil 1 gear oil.

Least I'm good for 2 years on that job.

2008 Chev 3/4 ton Burb with 3034 MP transfer case. Although Dex 6 is the normal fluid I’ve been using Auto Trak II for the last 16 years. It’s the original transfer case and it has 260,000 miles on it. The Auto Trak II is blue in colour and is nicknamed Smurf Fluid. The old stuff still had a blue tinge after 30,000 miles on it. The new fluid is on the right, old on the left. It had the usual amount of metal filings on the magnet. Back when the MP Auto Trak transfer case came out, the local mechanics recommended using the Auto Trak fluid. I just went with it.

For 15 years I drove 2002 silverado with auto-trac always came out dark colored ,I believe that color is due to the clutch plates in transfer case shedding a small amount of material. I bought a super low mileage Chevy Colorado with NON Auto Trac transfer case after 60,000 miles the fluid came out almost clear!

2004 F-150, 8.8 rear, 189K miles.
Out with unknown, at least it was not original fill, quite dark and in need of changing out.
In with 75W-140 Supertech synthetic. Approx 2.75 qts.
