Post your dry dog food

This is good information! When we got our Yorkie, the breeder was feeding her Taste of the Wild puppy food. I switched her to Hill's Small & Mini. The label lists whole grain corn as the 4th ingredient.

My recent research found that Hill's Science Diet dog foods are rated pretty low, so I had decided to switch her back to Taste of the Wild, but a small breed variety. It is grain free. From what you guys are saying, I think I've made a good choice. The Taste of the Wild dog food lists the ingredients as: Venison, lamb meal, garbanzo beans, peas, lentils, pea protein, canola oil, egg product, duck meal, pea flour, tomato pomace, natural flavor, ocean fish meal, salt, etc.

I'm anxious to make the switch, and see how she does.

For the price, Kirkland is hard to beat. Dog Food Advisor rates their chicken/rice food 5 stars, and the cost is about $35 for a 40-lb bag. Of course, you have to have a Costco membership to buy it.
I also like the 4Health line for value. Both are Diamond products.

I rotate flavors of Fromm 4-star or Gold large breed for my dog...good stuff.
It is good quality stuff. My 2 little guys are different. One's a picky eater ...but he's 17+ years old now and we Just learned his kidneys are going...switched to the Hills prescription kidney canned food...he eats it like a small hog. The other guy is 11 and eats anything I feed him in a matter of seconds. He's bulky for a Toy Poodle.
The older guy average weight.
Both Toy Poodles.
I like the Weruva canned. Expensive, but my guys deserve it. Older guy can't eat the protein stuff anymore...but he's loving his new stuff. I'm surprised by it.
BTW, as an ex cop...dogs are better than most people. Fact

I wouldn't be quick to decide on a grain free diet for your dog. There is growing evidence that it can lead to cardiovascular issues, especially when grains have been replaced with legumes and pea family foods.

it's also not a good idea to regularly switch or mix proteins. can lead to additional allergies, and you want backup options in case your dog ever develops an allergy to their existing food. i'd be wary of that turducken in a bag.

Purina Alpo, or purina Dog Chow. They get lots of eggs, bones, kitchen scraps too, also they sneak some goat grain sometimes(has molasses in it), and the odd time I see them at the mineral salt lick. The farm supply has some really cheap dog food which we tried but they didn't like it.
Maremma's are a large breed, but don't waste too much energy or eat more than they need, so they don't eat much less than something like a yellow lab, and don't overeat(unless its something really good), and ours seem to go 13-14 years on the cheaper food.

A few years ago, one ate nearly a pound of dark chocolate once(we were cooling truffles on the covered porch), and was a bit twitchy for the afternoon, but the next day was back to normal. He is maybe 130-140lbs so I guess that helps.
You are lucky. Dark chocolate is very poisonous to dogs.

Science Diet is another food that used to be a quality food. After Colgate Palmolive bought them it became a formula for the corporate bean counters.
With all foods, the ingredients label list them by % highest to lowest. So with any food check for corn and soy. You don't want that.

We adopted a shelter puppy about a month ago. The shelter uses Hills Science Diet chicken/rice formula for puppies. After about a week of having him we noticed he scratched alot and scooted his butt on the floor. I had a hunch it might have been either the chicken or grain that he might be allergic to. We have a small family-owned pet store close by that recommended N&D Pumpkin/Lamb formula. After 2 weeks on it he eats less and the scratching is almost non-existent. It has vegetables (carrots, peas, etc) fuits (blueberries, apples, etc) and comes highly recommended for puppies with sensitive tummies.

Pumpkin is very good for their digestive track.

Grains are fine for dogs. It's one of the main distinctions between domesticated canines and wolves.

I've fed kirkland for years, chicken rice and vegetable for most of their lives, now salmon formula for the dog with joint problems and weight management for the dog with metabolic issues. As someone mentioned, it's just re-labeled Diamond. Great balance of protein/fat/fiber, addresses their joint and weight issues very well at a good price. The picky one doesn't like salmon but I didn't like spending $10k on new knees, so it's what she gets and she's doing super well for her age.
When a wild canid kills their prey, the first thing they chew into is the stomach/intestinal area. Their prey eats plants/grains etc. They are going after what the prey has just eaten.

4 Health (Tractor Supply) was recommended to me from out vet who stated it was as good as the lux dog foods but for less cost. I noticed a shinier coat for our dogs within a month. Have been using it for about 6ish years now.
It looks good on the label.

We've been feeding our 5 month old Rottweiler puppy Kirkland Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable Dry Food and Kirkland Puppy Chicken and Pea Formula which is what the breeder was feeding her.

We noticed her poop is starting to get runny and she farts like crazy. So, a local pet store recommended we do the 5Strands Pet Food Intolerance Test. We are awaiting the results.
