could a switch to an synthetic on high mileage engine cause head gasket to seep a bit ? If so , would changing back to an regular oil help it possibly decrease or decease ?

If a head gasket is bad,it needs to be replaced. It has nothing to do with whether you ue an synthetic oil or regular oil

I agree. Synthetic oil does not really create leaks, it just makes leaks that you already have more apparent. If you have a head gasket that leaks with synthetic, get the head gasket replaced ASAP. Going back to a conventional oil will only be a band aid for a big problem.

Hold on folks. Yes it could. Regular oil allows build up that can form a false seal. It could also plug a small headgasket leak. The synthetic over time could clean it up enough to cause it to leak. This is the reason my TR3 with 125,000 miles on conventional oil does not get synthetic. Seals could leak as well as other unsuspected places. If you don't think you get this build up with conventional oil don't ever do a tear down on a engine with a steady diet of conventional. Some think the new conventional oils don't cause this build up. They could be right but my TR3 has been on conventional from 1974-2007 and I know the old stuff left build up.

I was once told on this board, that oil of choice had nothing to due with headgasket issues??

I'd surely like to know the truth, myself, of whether or not it's possible.

On very old vehicles with old gaskets, it might not be a good idea to use synthetic oil. A TR3 that hasn't been recently rebuilt (with modern gaskets) is definitely not a good candidate for synthetic oil!

Synthetic oils are not supposed to cause leaks.
But not a few times I have seem customers switch to synthetics and develop leaks from seals and gaskets.
Do you mean valve cover gasket or cylinder head?

cylinder head . Cleaned it up , keeping an eye on it . Hopefully just old residue from over the years .

Personally I believe in using one run of Auto-RX before switching to synthetics in an older, high-mileage car. I ran Auto-RX in my car just to make sure that my car won't leak when I decide to switch to synthetics sometime soon. Just a safety cushion for me, and it's nice having a clean engine too, even though it was clean before I ran it

What kind of leak? oil ,coolant ,compression? Where is it leaking ? to the outside between the block and head or into the cylinder cumbustion chamber? Valve cover to head mating surfaces or depending on the engine the sparkplug tubes etc.etc

A false seal that holds compression?

Yup more bad information on the internet folks!
A bad headgasket is not anything to do with what kind of oil you run, period! Ifa headgasket is bad,it'll allow anti-freeze inside of the cylinders, then mixing with the oil.

remember , I said appears to be . If is , it's oil seeping to ouside of the block , no coolant seems to be disappearing . No coolant in tailpipe .

Are you sure it's not the valve cover gasket? I'm thinking you should give the engine a good wash down so that you can see where the oil's running from.

nope , head gasket , left hand sie of rear corner of block . It's quite clean for now , used tooth brushes to clean that area .
