Depreciation is indeed the key with these brands. The percentage may be comparable with other brands but the dollars are much more substantial.

The depreciation on a percentage basis is usually worse.

For instance the OP is looking at a 35k 2010 model that listed for $132k with 74k miles. So about 26% of list price after 8 years. Probably good for at least 75-125k more miles. Maintenance costs probably won't be anywhere near the depreciation it's suffered so far, but probably still higher than a Camry. But it has a lot more options/features than a Camry.

Perfect!

Nothing wrong with it, either.

My extended family here buy a lot in the used market. In this part of Fl we have beautiful garage kept babies that are barely used! We LOVE depreciation.

We buy new trucks frequently, but personal vehicles? I like to keep the good ones ten years or more...

But the Camry isn’t a financially irresponsible choice.

Panameras are $70k+. Let's say it's loaded and the purchase price was 90k. 35k for an 8 year old car is 40% or comparable to any other brand

Or one that's not that nice (like mine) for about the same price as a Mitsubishi Mirage with power windows!

This is the one he was thinking about.

It claims it was $132k MSRP, but no one pays MSRP. Not sure what the max discount was, maybe 10-12%? Anyway, at 132k list, 35k used with 74k miles is 26%, even if you got 10% off new, it's still about 29%.

Now are you tempted to get one? My Mercedes was 65k MSRP, probably pretty close to that as a purchase purchase because it was probably a custom order with a custom paint and with a bunch of rare options. It was 6 years old and I bought it used for 18.5k. Still driving it 4 years later and no killer repair prices, most expensive part has been tires and rims. With deprecation, probably down to around 10-12k now, still that's about the deprecation you'd suffer buying a new Camry and I didn't even spend new Camry money on it.

To an accountant that doesn't make sense. $93k base, all the options are $0 so the MSRP should also be $93k

In any case, my GL 550 was 100k out the door, got it 3 years later with 20k miles for $56k plus auction fees and shipping of around $4k. The dealers sell the same thing for around $70k so to a regular buyer it would have depreciated 30% in 3 years

Which car auction was it? Thank you.

Adesa. It's for dealers.

That dealer seems to have left the price of the options out. I guess in theory they're all supposed to add up to 132k which I guess is possible considering that the two leather options alone account for $5600. Go to the website below, select the 4s and then click on features to get the list of options. The bose system was $1440, Burmester was a $5690 option which they skipped.
