I don't see anyone seriously disparaging folks who drive economy cars.

If someone can responsibly afford their choice of toy, be it an expensive/exotic car, boat, airplane, etc. why is it a "poor financial decision"? The OP here is obviously aware of the potential costs of an older Porsche and is doing the smart thing by asking opinions (BTW-a well maintained, w/ records, Panamera isn't a bad choice for what they are). I would suspect that many who own these cars are not having mental issues (well major ones at least...) or mid-life crises, but are living "debt free", work hard, make good decisions and enjoy their choice of toys.

Life is too short for boredom...someone here said 'drive what makes you happy' or something similar. good advice.

Boy, you must not be familiar with the BITOG dynamic. These people are responding to the inevitable criticism levied by the financial policemen of BITOG who disparage anybody who buys a car whose sole duty isn't to move them from point A to B as cheaply as possible, scoffing at the idea that a car can do more than service this appliance-like usage profile and labelling those that purchase such vehicles as financially irresponsible.

Buying a Euro car isn't a poor financial decision any more than buying a used Geo Metro if that's what the budget allows. If somebody can afford to purchase a Porsche or even a Maybach, why does somebody have to jump in and question their sanity because they've chosen to do so?

There are people massively upside down on cars worth far less than the Porsche the OP is entertaining. A Walmart greeter buying a 20K Hyundai may be significantly more leveraged than the physician buying an AMG.

The vast, VAST majority of BITOG'ers aren't on here for financial advice, yet some feel the need to hand it out, interjecting with scathing condescension regarding any purchase that may be viewed as slightly frivolous.

In the meantime, if one just drove trough a big medical establishment/tech company parking lots, I would say those people do not care about our opinion.
Usually they could afford it/get deals based on high pay+good credit.

Soo, like MCompact said, "Drive what makes you smile"?

Exactly

^^^Completely true.

IMO, especially if you can afford it, why not have a vehicle that makes you smile as you walk up to it?

That can be almost anything, just enjoy it!

Ok, let me try again, for very last time. My initial post was based on experience of my co-worker, that purchased porshe back in the days and heavily regretted his decision - the car was a money pit and he spent a ton before he managed to get rid of it. Is every porshe like that? For sure not!
And what happened next? You people began to $hit over those driving cars, “cheaper” than yours! Why would you think that only porshe or mercedes can make a person happy? I drive civic and can’t ask for more. It perfectly fits ALL my needs even though i could go right now and purchase AMG C63. But i will never do that since I BELIEVE it is a poor financial decision. Again, i’m not a financial advisor and i could care less what you spend your money on. Drive what you like and can or cannot afford. But be adequate, and think twice before saying something. I apologize if anyone’s feelings got hurt, nothing i can do about it, such is life.

Any particular reason you're not buying them anymore lately?

Be adequate?
I can only assume that is your mission statement...

We all have different ideas as to what we like to drive and use each day.
Nothing wrong with a Civic, just as there is nothing wrong with our current fleet of what would be considered fairly unexciting cars. One man's soulless appliance is another man's great daily driver just as another man's performance car would be considered a waste of money by some.
There's nothing wrong with someone wanting to drive something a little more entertaining and costly.
We are all utility maximizers. This is very basic microeconomic theory. If someone finds the personal value in owning any given car to be worth what that car costs, then who am I to say that they've made a foolish financial decision? Someone else might consider a couple of trips each winter to warm spots to be a frivolous waste while it might be worth it to another.
We all spend our money in ways that maximize our personal satisfaction, in cars, food, clothing, housing and leisure activities.
When I see a guy who buys himself a used Porsche, I have to think that he's probably a car guy who knew what he was getting and will enjoy his purchase.

Long time ago my older sister's boyfriend had a 928S.

That was a sweet ride back in the late 1980's.

Get you one! You can get a NICE 996 for less than a new Fiesta ST...

Or one that's not that nice (like mine) for about the same price as a Mitsubishi Mirage with power windows!

In 1992 I picked up my E24 M6 for a couple of hundred dollars more than a new Accord.
Yeah, that was a really tough call...

Euro luxury brands depreciate massively no surprise there and apparently never has changed. A very expensive vehicle for first owner. A potential bargain for 2nd owner of vehicle holds up.

...and this is what makes them so tempting.
Do your research, have the car you select checked out by a dealer or indie who knows what to look for and hand over a check that's a fraction of the car's original cost.
If you pay little enough for a machine that's decent overall you can then also accept the risk of some costly fix down the road.

Depreciation is my friend. I've only bought two new BMWs. The first was my Club Sport, which I've owned for going on 23 years. The other was a 1998 318ti which we would still have if we hadn't had to sell it to buy a larger car to transport our elderly parents.
I just hope that the know-nothings keep regurgitating third-hand hearsay about the running costs of BMWs; I'll then be able to buy the cars I want for an even lower price!
