porsche 944 turbo

I have a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo that has been on conventional oil for about the last 50,000 miles, my total mileage is 118,000. Am I safe to run synthetics in that year vehicle? If so do you recommend a higher viscosity oil? Also, it does have some blow-by, not sure if it's the rings or the valve guides. thanks

renos09ram - Blow-by needs to be checked out - what is your current oil consumption like? All going well in that regard you will be best to consider using a 5W-40 HDEO (synthetic) in your engine

Before I chipped the computer it would be 800 miles before I would need a qt now, if driven hard I would need a qt every 400. My boost originally was about 6 to 7 pounds now, it is at 13 lbs.

That blow by may be from the turbo. They can leak oil into the exhaust.
This may be your oil consumption problem.
Do you need thicker oil? Thicker than what?

A friend of mine has the indentical car. 1988 944 Turbo. He has some mild consumption. The car is a track only car for him, and he runs amsoil 0w40 european formula I beleive. He MAY have moved up to a 50 weight, but I'm not sure.

Your car should be fine with a synthetic, but regardless, It might be a good idea to get the blowby checked out. As a previous poster said, it IS most likely the turbo.

The blowby could also be a catch can that is full.
Don't use a 0w40 in a 944. Unless it's really really cold and you are driving to the shops to pick up milk. In other words, wrong oil.
