Yeah … early on - 10w40 and 10w30 were referenced …This article seems very outdated. It stated most automakers call for 5W-20 or 5W-30 in the colder months and 10W-30 in the warmer months. I can’t think of any vehicle built in the last 20+ years that says this in the owners manual.
Hyundai is about the only one I can think of that still has a temp chart, most manuals say to use one viscosity any more usually 0w20 or 5w30.Don’t some current manuals still have the proper oil temperature chart?

It is rated based on how thick it is at either: 14, 5, -4, -13, -22, -31, or -40 Fahrenheit (-10, -15, -20, -25, -30, -35, or -40 centigrade) depending on the winter grade.
There is no winter grade for engine oils that uses 0 degrees Fahrenheit as the test temperature.
