“The crankshaft is partially submerged in a bath of oil.” ?? What decade are we talking about?

This article seems very outdated. It stated most automakers call for 5W-20 or 5W-30 in the colder months and 10W-30 in the warmer months. I can’t think of any vehicle built in the last 20+ years that says this in the owners manual.

Yeah … early on - 10w40 and 10w30 were referenced … 👀
What in the wide world of sports is going on here ?

The only one I know of is the Chrysler 3.5.

Most motor oils’ viscosity is rated based on how thick it is at zero degrees Fahrenheit (represented by the number preceding the W, which stands winter,.....

Um, no it isn't....

It is rated based on how thick it is at either: 14, 5, -4, -13, -22, -31, or -40 Fahrenheit (-10, -15, -20, -25, -30, -35, or -40 centigrade) depending on the winter grade.

There is no winter grade for engine oils that uses 0 degrees Fahrenheit as the test temperature.
