Pond project update......fish added

I also dyed the water blue. The water lily is really taking off as is the water lettuce and water hyianth.
Should get some pond beneficial bacteria today to add to it so it will get better balance.

Nice. What will happen to them during winter?
If the pond is at least 18-24 deep they will hibernate at the bottom as long as water doesn't freeze solid. They still need an air hole however so a small heater to leave a small open water area would be needed.

When I was a boy my grandfather had a fish pond with goldfish about 6-8" long. He fed them Quaker Oats. He had no running water or anything. It would freeze over in the winter. Seemed like pretty solid. In the spring, they were still alive. I never could figure it out.

They say they are very hardy fish

Also watch out for deer going for a dip, especially now that it's hot. My neighbor found a black-tailed deer doing laps in her pool. I could hear her screaming her head off from a 1/4 mile away. Armed with a 2x4 I ran over to save her from a psychotic slasher. The deer had already escaped. Also, watch out for @Jdeere562 bathing in your goldfish pond.

That is awesome, dont worry about the fish, they have survived longer than humans on this earth. Nothing special needed for them, even over winter. Im not saying dont but I never worried about icing over. They go into a semi hibernation. I remember walking on the ice and seeing them swimming below it.

By buying what the industry calls "feeder" goldfish you are doing them a favor at a chance of survival. They all won't survive but they are living more like a free fish now. I wouldn't get crazy about adding chemicals. Think about it like oil additives most are useless but in this case nature has your back and you may not be aware but all the plants you put in the pong already added billions of good bacteria, as does every left and peace of dirt that falls in.

Very cool, good luck.

How many gallons of water does the pond hold?

Volume and water exchange will be the main factors that allows the fish to survive and thrive long term.
