Hi,

I own a 2015 Grand Cherokee 5.7 HEMI Summit since 2 month now.

The car is almost new (bought it at 12'000 km / 7'500 miles), imported from US here in Switzerland.

I want to change oil soon.

I already have the 5W20 oil, but I need a filter. My problem is, for any filter brand (Mopar, Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Bosch,...), there is a different model for 2015 or 2014... Seems there is a change between those 2 years...

My question is: my Grand Cherokee is a 2015 modell, but manufacturing date is 07.2014... Do I Have to buy the filter for 2014, or for 2015???

As exemple, for Mobil 1 brand, 2015 modell requires M1-113A but 2014 requires M1-210A... So it's a bit confusing... And I don't want to buy both just for be sure...

Thanks for your help and greetings from Switzerland

Hmmmm. The Wix site shows everything around those model years 2013 through 2016 using the same filter. A check of the Mopar part number 4884899AC also shows the same filter for both model years.

In Switzerland, I think you can try a Purflux. (I don't think our American "Fram Ultra" is available there, which is really the best choice.) Purflux LS979 , check that part number to be certain it is right.
The unique accordion media shape is kinda cool. This is the OEM Maserati & Ferrari oil filter too, not bad company to keep. ....
Several threads here on bitog about it. One is https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/purflux-oil-filters.27409/

Try to determine if it is a 14 or 15 for sure. The owners manual has a year. The vin can be entered on a mopar site to get a year. Then use the Mobil 1 selector to pick the right one of the two filters. Which it seems you are using. Vehicles made in July would normally be for that year unless it was a major reworking. Send your vin to a dealer parts dept may also help. It's interesting what seems to be the same car gets two different filters recommended.

It's an imported car from US and Swiss dealer told me he's unable to get information (or I would say don't want to…because ofc dealers don't like imported cars as Swiss market ones are twice the price of US ones. FYI here a brand new GC Summit 5.7 is 93k...)

So, about the date in the owner manual, you will laugh but I got both manuals, dunno why, lol! I got one 2014 and one 2015 in my glovebox… So funny but it don't help me :-)

In my driver side door, I got a 07.2014 manufactured date.

And as you can see in the picture below, there is two filters, 04884899AC for cars built through October 14 and for cars built after october 14...

And I don't know which filter is on presently, a friend of me will change it but me I don't know how to check… Can I without to lift the car? Will probably be difficult to recognize the filter without removing it…

About pureflux, I'll take a look, seems nice. If there is only one model maybe I'll kow which one to buy, lol...

You should be able to just slide under and look at it. It should have a part # on it.

Hitman70, yes a Purflux LS979 does cross-reference to the Mopar MO-899, which fits your engine's manufacture date.
I checked the SOGEFI Purflux website for the dimensions, and mounting thread size too. Your engine uses the slightly larger oil filter compared to later built engines.

Should be easy to get in Europe. We have difficulty getting those cool Purfluxes in some sizes here in the U.S. There were a couple of threads about how Ferrari and Maserati dealerships here in America would charge a lot of money for them! That "chevron" accordion filter media creates a lot of area, and no other filter I've seen does that.

Ok so I took a look under my car for see the oil filter.

Seems the previous owner (I bought it at about 7'500 miles) already replaced it with Something not genuine... Not Mopar at least...

Here is a picture:

What is this? KN maybe?

It's a bit greasy in the black part. Should it be? I'm a bit worried about this...

About Purflux LS979, I found it on a Swiss website for a bit less than 8$...

So really really cheap... Seems Italian brand. Are you sure it's very good and reliable, because price seems low lol.

If yes, I'll order it.

Yeah seems a FRAM you right... Not so bad, but is it normal the black part is a bit oily?

I believe they could be of good quality.

That was definitely a Fram Ultra oil filter on your engine, considered the best choice here in the U.S., and, yes your Fram Ultra XG2 size cross-references with Mopar MO-899 and Purflux LS979.
If you can get a Fram Ultra XG2 in Switzerland, that is the best. The Purflux LS979 appears to be a good choice too.

A little grease or oil on the oil filter is likely not a problem. Do inspect, or have someone inspect, all the underside of the engine and transmission to try and see if there are leaks. Always a good idea to do that. And, park it over clean light colored ground overnight and look for drops of anything to tell you there is a leak. Sometimes you can put a blank piece of white poster paper, which is a stiff thin cardboard, to really see leak drops if they exist.

Thanks for your answer. So I'll order this "cheap" Pureflux, for 8$, seems Worth it ;-)

The garage where my car is parked have a all new white floor, so if there was any leak, even a single drop of oil, I would see it and there isn't. But the filter is greasy, that's why I'm worried. But if this not a problem, that's ok.

About oil now, I need 5W20. Here in Switzerland (and mainly Europe), most of cars use 5W30/5W40//W30/0W40. My 2nd car, a Porsche Cayman, use 5W50. But 5W20 is very hard to find.

I know 5W20 only must be used, do to cylinder desactivation system. So I ordered it in the US, I found a pack of 12 quart Pennzoil yellow for a good price including shipping (96$ shipping included, so way less than any oil here in Switzerland where even crap cheap oil is about 70$ for 5 quarts)...

The order is done. But now, I read many things about Pennzoil yellow. Some says it's ok and even it's factory filling, some says it sucks... As I understand, it's not synthetic. I didn't even know that no synthetic oil still exists for modern cars , because here any oil you can buy is synthetic.

Is there a problem if I use this yellow Pennzoil for my 5.7 HEMI?

US vehicles spec 5W-20 for gas mileage reasons.
May or maynot affect the cylinder deactivation. A thinner
5w30 should work well though.
Europe favors thicker oils.

My 2¢

Pennzoil is made by Shell, a British-Dutch brand that has a great reputation. Also, 5.7L HEMI engines are not that hard on oil, and the Pennzoil 5w20 conventional is a good choice actually here.
I use Pennzoil Platinum synthetic oil myself quite often. I prefer a Group3+ (PurePlus) or PAO synthetic oil, but Pennzoil conventional is very good oil too.
Any conventional 5w20 that meets "SN GF-5" is the right specification for that 5.7L HEMI engine. European oils available like Shell brand, also Motul, Elf, Quartz, Fuchs, Castrol, others, etc. would work well as long as they at least say just "SN" on the bottle or jug and are 5w20.

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 HEMI. It uses a K&N HP-2010, or a Fram XG-2. Or most any other brand that cross references those 2. As for oil you should be using a full synthetic 5W-20 that meets Chrysler MS-6395 Spec. That includes Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum. There may be a few others, but the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 is all I have ever used.

Chrysler says its OK to use a conventional GroupII 5w20 (SN GF-5 is all you need, although its nice to see the MS-6395 number there but it means little actually.).
If using a conventional oil, I wouldn't drive past 9,000 km with it. A synthetic should be able to go to 11,000 km easily.

I'm not sure about whether or not it would be safe to go thicker on a vehicle with cylinder deactivation - 5.7L HEMI here. There is an OBDII engine code that says "P1521-INCORRECT ENGINE OIL TYPE" where, using the oil pressure, oil temperature and other vital engine inputs the PCM can determine the engine oil viscosity. Incorrect viscosity will effect the operation of the MDS by delaying cylinder activation.
As long as one never got that engine alert "check engine" light on the dashboard, then it should be fine. The engine will tell you!

An SN GF-5 5w30 is not that much thicker, only a small increment thicker, than SN GF-5 5w20.
If it was me, I might try an SN GF-5 (American style) 5w30 synthetic or conventional of a reputable brand (Shell or Castrol likely), and see if the OBDII P1521 code happened. If it doesn't, its fine.

Thanks for your help.

So I'ill use a Pureflux filter and the Pennzoil yellow oil I ordered, for my next oil change (I've 7'000 km now since last one, so I'll do it at 10'000 km I guess).

I just hope this greasy filter isn't a problem.

And, because it's almost impossible to get 5W20 oil here in Switzerland (that's why now I ordered the Pennzoil in the US), I had to top up my oil level yesterday so I used the only 5W20 I found: Castrol Edge Professional 5W20. Problem is, It isn't SN...

Does it risk to break my engine? I added about 250ml (about 1/4 quart).

This oil:
