I was watching O' Brother Where Art Thou? last night on MTV when I noticed they dubbed the word "sumbitch" over "cracker" when Pappy O'Daniel responds to Delmer outside the radio station. Geez, this is getting ridiculous. Call me a cracker, redneck or whatever, it won't bother me. I can't believe the attack on freedom of speech.

It's the Soggy Bottom boys !!....

What's the difference between a cracker and a honky?

Honky is almost always derogatory, usually used by black people referring to white people.

Cracker can be derogatory but is also used to indicate that a person's family has been in the South a few generations as opposed to a danm yankee.

I read somehwere that honky came from the days when white men had black girlfriends, and they'd drive to their houses to pick them up, rather than getting out of the car and knocking on the door, they'd stay in the car and honk the horn.
My family's been in the south since they got off the boat from Liverpool and Glasgow, many generations ago...but we're not crackers.

This is a pretty complete explanation.

A humorous aphorism attributed to E.B. White summarizes these distinctions:

To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

"African American" still gets me. There are tons of black people in my office and I can assure you that none of them came here from Africa. I doubt some of them could even point Africa out on a globe.

I haven't done any research into my family heritage, but I can only guess by my last name that somebody 'in the tree' came here from France. Should I be demanding that everyone describe me as a "French American"? How stupid.

Some people like to have an identity over and above what their name provides. Many people add the tags MD, PhD, JD, Sen., etc. and sometimes get quite huffy if you don't acknowledge them. Those are ones I would contest, but in my experience society generally gives them a pass.
