Polishing wheels

If I am going to polish clear coat wheels by hand using microfiber applicator pads, should I polish with Ultimate Compound or Ultimate Polish?

I'll be finishing with Collinite 845.

I'm assuming they're painted wheels? If in bad shape then UC, for average condition use the UP. If you have a drill use one of those Mothers Power Ball type attachments to make them look great. That would be the way to go.

Since wheels get dirty fast usually they need a deep cleaning which a marine polish would work nicely. Plus is great for chrome trim and $13:

I wouldnt use anything abrasive on clearcoat wheels. I would clean them with car wash and pass a clay bar on them, followed by a couple coats of collinite and some armor all or megs spray that keeps wheels easier to clean etc. Thats what I do.

I would just clay and wax them unless the paint has dulled or oxidized. Then I'd probably just use ultimate compound.

Wheel paint luckily is pretty tough stuff and laid on thicker than car paint so it can take a little more abuse.

Clay followed by Ultimate Polish. Either by hand or PowerBall type products. There is no wax that can stand the heat of brakes, but you will NEED to put something. So far Meguairs Brake Dust Barrier is working out very well.

Ultimate Compound will be fine and would be my choice on clear coated wheels. 90% of the clear coated wheels I have polished have had super rock hard clear coat so Ultimate compound should work great, but doing it all by hand might be a task. They should look great after ultimate compound and some sealing with 845.

I've had Collinite 845 last plenty long on my painted wheels. Months at a time even.

The wheels don't get all that hot actually, unless you're racing autocross my wheels have never gotten to the point where I can't touch them and certainly on black cars I've had the hood and roof get so hot I can't touch them.

And probably another wax that is specifically made to tolerate more heat than your standard OTC waxes is Finish Kare FK1000P. Good stuff and extremely durable, but since it does stain trim I'd personally just use it for wheels.
