I had a little 'ding' on the front of the hood of my 1996 Buick PA. I filled it in and then painted the area with the same color base coat, a GM 9800 (dark sweet cheery metalflake). The paint is right on for a match for color from the spray can, but it appears there is a little "over spray" up on the normal clearcoat of the hood. The paint can recommends using a polishing compound to blend in the new spray with any overspray. Do I now apply the top coat or "clear coat" before I do any buffing or polishing, then polish?
Many thanks!

I would apply the clearcoat before any polish. I think I would take some cleaner maybe lacquer thinner and gentlely clean off the over spray if you get it on the base coat it should be ok it will give you an oil free surface to spray the clear coat over. Then let it set for a few days before you polish it.
