Police light bar effectiveness

Overpopulation is killing our planet. Speed limits should be raised, or removed completely. If someone wants to drive 110 while towing a trailer, let them. Take pride in the fact that their genes will not make it to the next generation, and eventually we will only be left with a bunch of sensible, careful drivers.
Sure that above driver might take out a loaded minivan on his way over the cliff, but eventually everyone will slow down and limit each other.

If you wanted to take it one step further, replace all road barriers and railings with shaped charges designed to take out anyone who contacts them. And instead of a fire department or paramedics, just have a fleet of bulldozers to push the wrecks into a giant ditch on the side of the road...

Less people, self imposed speed limits, and a plethora of scrap metal. Everyone wins!!!

It would be nice if cops really did go after aggressive drivers, but I've never seen this happen. Radar/lidar is the only tool they use around here.

No, we need fewer maniacs driving 80-90+ in a 55-65 zone, weaving in and out of traffic, almost killing people, and driving like they are on crack all the while they are yacking on their cell phones.

If people would slow down not only would the roads be safer but we would use a ton less fuel. Time for the return of the 55 MPH speed limit and STRICT and unyielding enforcement of it.

I love hearing on the news that "Speed Kills" and when there is an accident that "Speed may have been a factor"

WAKE UP PEOPLE, SPEED DOESN'T KILL, STUPID DRIVERS DO!

When I was in Europe, where speed limits in certain countries are treated more like suggestions, and even in Germany where there isn't speed limits on certain highways I never saw an accident, just a lot of traffic flowing nicely on 2-3 lane roads that in North America we can't fit a fraction of that traffic through 6 lanes because of inconsiderate drivers who park themselves in lanes and do 10 less than the speed limit because "Speed Kills"

I do a lot of driving for my job and will put on 60K KM (37.5K Miles) a year and I drive a lot faster than the posted limits and have never had an accident ever. Now I don't speed just to speed, but to get where I need to go without wasting time. I never speed in school zones or where I don't feel it is a safe choice. However on back country road and highways, I do. I'm always cautious of others around me, always leave space should I need to brake suddenly or swerve to avoid an accident situation or hitting something.

+1 On return of 55. What's the hurry?

No hurry at all. Why so slow? BTW, I don't drive like a maniac. One example is that I may drive 75 today or 55 mph on my way home. I don't believe that I should always drive 75 mph.

Also, driving like a maniac is dangerous at any highway speed.

What safety principle is this 55 mph based on? It's really odd that every road must be designed so similar with very similar traffic patterns & exit control such that the same speed is the optimum safe speed for all conditions at all times. Just amazing, really.

You'll have lots of time to think about speed limits the next time you feel you might be having a heart attack and are being driven to the hospital... at 55mph.

The 55 MPH speed limit was one of the dumbest ideas of all time. It was passed just as a generation intolerant of stupid authorities was coming of age. It did more to create contempt for authority than anything else. If you want to drive 55, go ahead. Stay in the right lane please, somebody needs to use it. Just don't try to force everyboy else to do it.

I resent the suggestion I drive like a maniac while talking on the phone. Oh, if nobody was in the left lane with space to the right of them, nobody could weave in and out.

Speak for yourself. While a 55MPH speed limit might be fine for congested urban areas, it does not work well for sparsely populated rural areas.

Yep. If a 4-lane divided, limited-access highway is only good for 55MPH, than a 2-lane highway with at-grade intersections must only be good for, say, 35MPH.

I think 55MPH is a safe speed, though. It gives you more time to enjoy the cellphone conversation, text message, read the paper, etc. (I note that many of the drivers who are engaging in such things are driving well below the speed limit. So perhaps the speed limit should be lowered to accommodate them).

Getting back on topic (as though this wasn't going to morph here

)

I have noted that the NuWingland states seemed to favor the lone blue color. It's been thaht way in Mahss frum wen I wahs a kid.

Here we seem to have a variety of altered blue/red combos. Some are pretty straight forward RED:BLUE ..while some have neon aspects to the color.

PA appeared to evolve into the differentiation between Emergency and Police. The fire fighters use blue for their personal vehicles ..as does private security. Public service (either municipal or private) is yellow.

I live in "Cow'Hampshire" dude. Doesn't get much more rural. 55-60 MPH is as fast as anyone needs to go.

Maybe one of the car manufacturers will come out with the "Lane Commander" so you can make sure of that. Or..maybe you could get a badge and be a cop. Or go to school and become a traffic engineer so you could back up your contentions about what speed limits should be with a little book larnin'. (Oh, but you'll need DATA too. Oh well).

Yes, it does. West Virginia has half the population density. They also have a 70MPH speed limit.

Texas, which also has roughly half the population density, has some interstates posted at 80MPH.

BTW, someone who tools around in a 5.7L Hemi pickup shouldn't even go there, since it seems just as likely that larger vehicles will be heavily taxed and/or CAFE'd out of existence as it is that a national 55MPH speed limit will be enacted.

I support neither of those, by the way.
