This should be in the Humor section.

There was a nasty, drunk-vomit smell coming from both the kitchen drains (two basin sink). I hate disconnecting pipes because if they're not leaking, they will when re-assembled. It was getting so bad, the nook and the family room started stinking. I could even smell it when I was in the car.

The smell had to be coming from above the trap.
  • I first ran ice in the disposal, followed with a soap and a brush - Fail.
  • I then poured in two-part, slow drain gel and let it stand overnight - Fail.
  • I tried a drain opener and let it stand overnight - Fail.
  • I tried a gallon of Simple Green and let it stand overnight - It was a little better; the smell was now coming from the non disposal side but - Fail.
  • Bleach is a kind of no-no, especially with constant use with PVC cement; use with caution - Fail.
  • I gave in and removed the trap. It was filled with water and very clean (of course it was). Only build-up was in the dishwasher discharge hose (location that wasn't touched previously with cleaner). Replaced the dishwasher air trap and hose connecting the air trap to the disposal - Fail.
  • The only thing not yet touched was the dishwasher. Threw in a couple of cleaner tablet and ran a full cycle - Fail.
Finally called the pros. I described what I had already done. They verified that the p-trap was filled with water, and the smell coming from the non-disposal side. In desperation, they replacing the strainer basket, even though it was clear - Fail.

They continued with the sniff test around the sink, and tried cleaning surfaces. The plumber's helper gave the potted Christmas Cactus that was on the sill a sniff, and the gag reflex kicked in HARD - Success!

The cactus was in a plastic pot with an attached drain pan. My wife watered this thing until it overflows, and leaves standing water in the drain pan. When she walks through the plate department at HD, all the plants get nervous. I swear, I can see them tremble.

Everyone was rolling on the floor laughing. I bet the folks back at the shop had a good laugh too.

Glad you figured out the small that you were having .

Thats a lot of detective work !

Unusual story for sure , thanks for sharing it with us .

Your wife must have gone to the same horticulture school as my wife. We just put some rooting bamboo out on the back deck and it will be bye bye when the rain stops. 😤

...along same lines...got a call from a plumbing customer about a squeak coming from the basement. She had her oil boiler service company come out to find the loud squeak. Problem was every time the service fellow opened the cellar door the noise would stop. Only once did anyone hear the noise when in the basement but no source was found. She called me to try to find the squeak as no one else could find it. Now this lady was 80 and had lived a lot of life. Anyway I kinda knew the source of the noise. So I went into the basement and sure enough the noise stopped. I stood quiet for couple minutes and the squeak started up again..found the large cricket behind a board up against the wall..only after several boiler controls were replaced by her oil company thinkin one of them had noisy relay..
