Do the pleats serve any purpose other than looks? Do they provide more room across the front?

Do you prefer trousers with pleats, or do you prefer a flat front? Why?

When I worked at a Toyota dealer, all the mechanics were issued flat front trousers to wear, but the parts guys had pleats.

I personally prefer pleated...both for looks and extra room. I am heavy set....slender guys may not need the extra room that my short stocky body requires.

+1

I have some of each.
No biggie either way.
The no-pleat pants are easier to iron.

I like flat fronts but when I hit my 50's, I also preferred a flexible waist band to boot. I found that pleats developed wear marks when working with counters.

Nope-I'm calling him out on every one of them.......

My dad once ironed a pair of my jeans when I was in the seventh grade.
I was laughed at and ridiculed so much I refused to let my dad do that ever again!

true story

Because of my age and body structure, I prefer pleated trousers. Although I have both pleated & non pleated/flat front. I look good in both I must say!

100%, although the only exception to this rule is when wearing a suit.

IDK about he parts guys Vs. the service guys, it sounds like some subtle form of identification/status thing.

There must be some long lost history concerning the purpose of pleats, but now I think its primarily sartorial. Personally, I prefer pleats on dressier pants, and on slim guys. The last thing a fatso needs is more of anything, and the idea that the extra material gives extra room while at the same time hiding that fact is the same illogic as fat chicks stuffing themselves into anything white in the summer time thinking the tight white distracts from the fact that they are over weight.

Agreed.

I'm with Rolla07, they're a dressy detail for men's trousers.

They DO NOT look good on women's trousers (by my eye) as they add material where most gals want a good fit.

Pleated women's trousers would require "double duty" tailoring so the pleat would also lay right. Kira

Pleats reduce the appearance of a bulging waistline.

Taking a full length picture of yourself from not too close and not too far will help figure out if they are needed.
