Ive been reading a lot about this infamous oil questions everyone has at least once in life lol. Well here is my case

The car: Ford focus svt, 2.0L Zetec, which is NOT longer stock. Now it has low compression (8.7-1 compare to 10.2-1 stock) forged internals and it is turbocharged (something like a t3/t04E 50 trim turbo), revs to 7200rpm, 12psi of boost.

The use: Daily driver with some spirited driving every now and then, I'd say 40% of the time, I average 35 miles a day. 55% city, 45% highway.

The weather: I live in the desert, when its been hot outside we have hit 120F many times, 110-115F are normal during spring-summer, during winter, the coldest I remember was 28F, and that was very rare, most likely to see 36F.

My tuner suggested me to go synthetic, 40 weight during winter and 50 weight during summer. I went asking around i found out other turbo shop use what the non-svt zetec uses but synthetic (5w20), both for daily driving and track, if daily driving, they suggest 5000 mile OCI, if racing only, they suggest changing after every road race.

Since the car is not stock i cant follow any recommendation from dealers, or other sources of info that are about the car but naturally aspirated, everything is very confusing, some say I can damage the oil pump using what im using (5w50 castrol edge and motorcraft fl400s oil filter) and should use what i used before 10w40 when stock, others like my mechanic, my tuner, and other friends suggest keeping the 50 weight all year round. What do you guys think?

sorry if its one of those typical questions, but i searched and couldnt find someone with a similar case.

I hardly doubt that thick of oil is needed, stick with any good name brand synthetic,M1,PP,PU,Amsoil etc,etc in a 5w20,5w30, OR a HDEO 5w40 would be a great fit.

Let´s see. Castrol has Synthetic in 5w-40, 10w-40, 5w-50. Of these 3 I have heard more praise for the 5w-50. It sounds like you,re not running stock crank or rods. If your tuner and engine builder prefer 40 or 50 weight, you should run the 5w-50.

Don't go lower than a 30.
A synthetic 40 or 50 as mentioned sounds very reasonable in your case.
Many guys turbo the Zetecs in the ZX2s and leave the compression stock[ 9.6]. Of course, good tuning is a must.

this is exactly what ive been told in other places, some say i should stay with 5w30 like from factory, but my block is not even the stock, i dont have oil squirters in this block im using (from an escort zx2).

about 0w40, does not 0w mean its protection @ very cold climates?, when i bought this 5w50, i even looked for a 10w instead of 5w, because like i said its not very cold in my city.

stock crank yes (has been taken up to 600whp with no problems), rods are forged, other reason i asked all this, is because im one of the only ones in the focus forums who has turbo in the desert, which to be honest does not compare with the weather of florida and texas at all hehe.

I think "0w" means the oil is formulated with a higher class of base oils than 5w-40 is. Honda engines in cart indy racecars used to run mobil 1 0w-40 and maybe they still do.

Oh, Don't lower the car too much because hot air from the engine compt vents out the bottom.

Have a talk to the recommended engine repairer that you would use if a rebuild was required.

Another clue is the Merc SLR, GM Viper, Ford Shelby, Lexus LFA all high performance engines all use a 5w50 grade. The BMW M5 was using a 10w60 grade at one stage. Ferarri recommend a 5w40 despite what the Doc Haas uses.

High revs = higher fuel dilution = greater margin of safety = ?

Spirited driving - greater risk and unknown factors to compensated for = ?

I am sure the lower grades I mean thinner grades were considered by the OEMs but were rejected because ?

Asking the correct questions may lead to the correct answer.

Just wanted to post.. went to walmart to have a flat tire fixed, while waiting at their "car shop", i saw all the oil they had available for sale, oh surprise, 80% of the oil in there was 50 weight, synthetic oils were 5w-40 and 50, conventional oils went from 10w40 to 25w50. Havent checked autozone yet but i imagine something similar is going on there.
