Could you please rate the oils listed below? These can be easily bought in my country in Europe (all are 5w40). If you know any details (PAO, Ester, Group 3 etc) about some oil, please drop few words here.

Is the API SM any advantage?

Other than these common oils, I can get:

- Motul 300V 5w40: I had it in my previous car, no problems at all, but I'm not sure if it is suitable for daily driving
- Silkolene Pro S 5w40: this one is hard to get here...

This oil will come into a '98 Honda Prelude 2.2VTEC, daily driven with several track sessions and hard driving, so I would like something with higher HTHS. Local Honda dealer recommends the 5w40 grade.

Thank you!

Hi!

-Castrol GTX magnatec is group 3
-TXT is group 3 + 25% PAO
-Excelium XLL is specific BMW oil, try with excelium LDX (group3 + PAO)
-Esso ultron and Mobil syntS are same oil from same company but different package (both group 3)
-Motul xCess and Total q9000 (and excelium LDX) are very similar oil (mix group 3 + some PAO and ~same level of performanse)
-Shell helix ultra 5w40 is oil for east europien market (group 3 - XHVI), and for west you have "helix ultra" like 5w30 (gr. 3 + PAO) and 0w40 (PA0)

My favourite is Texaco 5w40. In Europe that is relative cheap oil, but looks good, nearly real synthetic (>75% PAO) and very share stabile (HTHS>4). (Look: http://www.havoline.com/images/products/pdfs/europe/synthetic_5W_40.pdf )
If you have in Czech you could try with M1 5w40 Highermileage. I using that in my Almera ('02) and working fine (supersyn aditive package + high HTHS index, about 3,8)

Thank you Mario.

Is it possible that we have no group 4 oils commonly available here in Europe?

Are you sure that the Havoline is the same in the USA and in Europe? It seems to me that same oils have different parameters depending on the location, so onecan't know what exactly is he buying.

Most 5W40 oils are group 3 + 4.
I think all 0W40's are group 4.
A fellow bitog member (Primus) is using elf 0W40 in his honda prelude with no complains.
It is elf's best oil.

Is the API SM (Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-40 and LiquiMoly Synthoil HighTech 5W/40 HD) any significant advantage or it doesn't matter?

LiquiMoly VOLLSYNTHESE ENERGY MOTOR OIL 0W40 & VOLLSYNTHESE MOTOR OIL 5W40 are listed on the www.liqui-moly.de website in the Full Synthetic and not the HC (Hydro Cracked Group III) section. If I recall correctly to be listed as Full Synthetic in the EU they need to be Group IV/V.

petrv,

in europe almost all "regular" 5w40 are group 3 or group 3+4. Exception is "racing" oils like motul 300v or silkolene.
Today many oil company hide real oil base because now gr. 3 is possible to calling "fully synthetic" (example: Mobil syntS and Castrol Magnatec writes "fully synthetic", but both are real gr. 3
http://www.rantatienoljykeskus.fi/SyntS_5W40_4l.gif )
If you look in the MSDS, all high percentage PAO oils having pour point > -50 st. C :)

Mario:

because I was so confused about the "fully synthetic", "100% synthetic" etc., so today I ordered Silkolene Pro S 5w40 (finally I could get it easily). It is as expensive as the Motul 300V, but it is approved by some car manufacturers, has some API and ACEA specifications etc. (300V has no API/ACEA/car specifications).
