AGIP>Castrol>Fuchs

Agip has a LOT of approvals, not worth much in and of themselves, but the overall protection and long-term resistance to degradation will surely be higher, especially with the GM approvals.

Castrol is nice because it is a lighter oil, so MPG improves likely without sacrificing anything. Fuchs doesnt have a lot of approvals, and may be a good oil, but the agip has similar specs when warm (I dont think you worry about cold temps)...

virginoil,
A comparison will not be really fair (if you offer to compare Agip Techsint 0W-40 or 5W-30, Titan SuperSyn SL 0W-30 and Castrol Edge 0W-40 !). So, based on base stock only I would rate as follows: Castrol, Fuchs and Agip.

In its time Agip Techsint series was quite popular due to its really top quality offered at a very attractive price and 5W-30 grade was usually rated higher then 0W-40. As for Sint Evolution, its gr.III+ like many other 5W-40 oils now. I don't say it's bad, but just not too "comfortable" composition for the real oil purists.

Castrol/agip/fuchs.
Castrol 0w-40 PAO base engine oil and BMW-01
MB 229.3
Agip base oil? BMW-01 MB 229.3
Fuchs PAO/Group3 BMW-98 MB 229.1

Castrol- I am turning into a 0w-xx freak. I also like the slightly thinner 40 weight. Higher flash point than the other 2 also.

Fuchs- Newer SM for API, but not as many overall approvals, but has lower visc @ 40, so a little easier when starting.

AGIP- Although many approvals, still SL formula, so may not be the newest formula

But I don't know much, so take it for what it's worth.

Looks like Castrol is the go, will try the 0w40 next change.

I have tried the Mobil 5W50 SL Supersyn a little start up noise, quietens fairly quickly though.

Currently with the Agip Tecsint 5w40 SJ, and no start up noise at all.

I didn't know Agip Sint Evolution was group 3, some think this is OK, I am not that fussed about it.

Thankyou to all who responded.

Hardly scientific and I battle to believe that Mobil 5w-50 gives better fuel consumption than 8100. Don't get me wrong, I use Mobil 0w-40 and Motul 300v and think they are both about as good as you can get for modern cars, but I do think the 8100 is a better oil than the M1. Did you do UOA?

My opinion on the original question...Castrol and then Fuchs...I would not put Agip into my car even if it were free.

3800s are so easy on oil, you won't have a problem with anything. I've had great results with dino, synthetic, thick and thin.
