Please Help !!! SL vs SN

Good day all... Ill keep this detailed and short hopefully.

Put Mobil 1 5w30 High Mileage in my 2005 Silverado 177000 miles the other day. Noticed today that Mobil 1 High Mileage meets API SL not SN. now Manual says nothing about soecific API Rating but says look for 2 things. 1: API Certified 2: GM 6094M. Mobil 1 High Mileage does not specify GM 6094M just says safe in all vehicles. Should I be worried and dump this oil. Placed about 30 Miles on oil so far.

PS: Looking at a bottle of Pen Plat and it meets SN, GM6094M as well as newest GM standard Dexos... That might be the Syn Oil for me.

Thanks a lot for any input Im a little concerned as I got this truck to 177K and dont want to screw it up now with a little slip

Your vehicle is hardly picky about oil. Use a name brand oil and be happy. You're way overcomplicating things. Your engine doesn't call for Dexos and I wouldn't bother looking anything into buying a Dexos oil with it, it was also built before API SN was detailed out but you can use SN oil. SL oil is a fine oil that had specifications laid out in 2001 and is perfectly fine.

Long as you're getting API SL, SM, or SN oil of the correct weight I'd say you're doing great.

I have been seeing this attitude more and more. I am not sure how I feel about it.
 
Mobil 1 High Mileage is great for the truck I bet SL was the spec for the truck in 2005.
 
A major difference between SL and SN oils is the zddp (anti-wear) additive content. The API decreased the allowable amount from 1000 ppm in SL to 800 ppm in SM in 2004. SM was the active oil specification when your engine was built, so I would say that the higher zddp in Mobil 1 High Mileage is not needed for your engine, but can't hurt anything. I ran Mobil 1 High Mileage in my Camaro when it reached 150k miles, and had decreased oil consumption compared to regular M1 by ~25%.
 
Thank's so much for these responses, does bring a little peace of mind seeing these answers, especially the technical ones. I would have defiantly hated to have to dump 6 qts of Mobil 1 with 30 Miles on it and replace an Mobil 1 filter

GM6094M is a cold temperature pumability spec that has been replaced by dexos1. It was not really a hard spec to meet apparently. Mobil 1 High Mileage may even meet it if it was tested, at least I wouldn't be surprised if it did, was originally spec'd for conventional oils.

Gabe, which part of that post are you not sure about?
