I just took it off for the pics I was taking at the time. Actually, very little road grime gets up there. You get some particles that collect in the valley in the cam cover around the coils, that's about it.

I took the cover off the TL during the summer and noticed a very slight increase in injector noise while standing next to the car with it running. Couldn't tell the difference inside the car and a normal person without OCD would probably not notice the noise outside anyway.

If you don't like the sound of your engine after the engine cover is removed, then buy something with a sweeter-sounding engine.

I'm not sure where anyone said they didn't like the sound with it removed...

I like the engine covers on our Xj8 - it makes for a very neat and attractive underhood presentation.

I'm not so hot on the covers on my GTO - they're OK. but the Holden ones look a lot better and I've thought about importing one.

Here are two pictures from my wife's '04 Mercedes ML350, one with the cover on, one with it removed. Depending on one's perspective, both looks can be appealing.

I just found a good reason to dislike an engine cover.

I opened the hood the other day and found that mice had been camping out... on top of the plastic engine cover!

The cover provides a nice warm spot for critters to "hang out". Not scalding, as the valve cover would be, and maintaining that warmth for hours.

On my VW, this has taken a worse direction. From the engine cover, mice had bored through the liner material on the underside of the hood. They dug a hole into the material and pulled out the stuffing, making a nest right on top of the engine cover!

I didn't think to take a picture, but I will if I see it happening again. Oh, right now the engine cover is off.
