Engine covers, on or off?

On my G35 it is off. I have taken other measures to keep the intake manifold cool, the cover kept it hotter. I don't care about noise.

The BMW, I don't care. It is on, I have never looked under it.

On the FX45 I keep it on because it quiets it significantly and it looks like a birds nest underneath.

GM calls it a "Fuel Injector Sight Shield."

I'm not a fan of engine covers, no matter whether the engine is nicely finished w/ tucked wiring or an ugly bundle of wires, hoses, and plastic. I'd rather see the mechanicals than something that was manufactured solely to cover them. I'm glad my car doesn't have one. Our Mazda3 does, though (same as the OP) and while I have always kept it on the engine I'd love any excuse to get rid of it. It doesn't really seem to keep anything especially clean AFAICT.

Totally agree with you! The 3MZ-FE although a very good motor, is also a very ugly one.

When I worked for one of the Big Three, the company had an "Under the hood appearance group". Essentially, they were an entity that made sure all the visible parts under the hood had a harmonious appearance. They took exception to the blue dye used for crack checking that was left on our brake master cylinder during production.

The very first thing I would do after leaving the dealer in a new C6 Vette is pull those covers OFF!!

I WANT TO hear the engine!! I LIKE/LOVE the way an LS3/7/9 looks, and when it is warm/hot out those things just help hold heat in the block/heads.

Luxo, or high zoot or not I will NEVER understand why the Teuton marques cover their very high tech, very good looking powerplants with these monstrosities (especially the M cars with their ITB-looking intake runners, and cool looking, high tech cam covers).

Apparently it happened the day after the marketing department finally figured out how to open the hood.

Marketeers have to "own" everything to justify their jobs.
