plastic chrome peeling

The inside door release handle is peeling. Can I sand it smooth and use chrome colored nail polish? It doesn't have to look factory new but its peeling in a way that there are sharp edges.

Sounds like a plan. I would also switch it to the back door if it's a 4 door.

Just wondering, is it your Elantra that the chrome is peeling?
My D/S inside door handle lever on my '09 has started to crack. It is so annoying/unsightly that I am also contemplating stripping it down to bare plastic, possibly painting it as well. Dealership wanted $90(!) for a new handle lever assembly.

It will work, but almost no paint can resemble Chrome. The only one that really does are from the scale modelling world, but this paints are very delicate to work with and dont meant to be so tough to hold up aganinst the use on a handle in a car.

I would go with a a glossy, shiny silver automotive paint from the rattle can and coat it with a clear coat and live with it. At least it will robust.

But at least it´s good looking.


Just for your Information, the plastic parts are originally produced in the factory by covering them with vaporised Aluminium to create the chrome look.

Yes it is the Elantra.
I'll wrap it with duck tape before I pay the Stealer $90.00.
And it is the D/S inside door handle.
