This is for a 99 Ford Ranger with the 4.0 OHV. Trans model is M5OD-R1. The original that is in it is making a really bad "rattle" noise in 3rd and 5th, as well as 2nd and 4th being really hard to shift. It's been doing this for a while and it seems to be getting worse, so it looks like I need to get a new unit.

Any ideas as who puts out a good rebuilt for a reasonable price on these?

Thanks.

Junkyard? Gotta be tons of those things laying around in junkyards.

Call a local mechanic and ask them - they'll know.

Probably others, too - try a google.

+1 I've also heard good things about Jasper.

I looked on line for prices of both junkyard and rebuilts. The prices are very close from what I have found so there isn't much point in going with a junkyard.

Nothing showing up on line in the local area anyway.

There seem to be a lot of rebuilders and I'm hoping to get some feedback from anyone that might have experience in this area.

Thanks.

The 5 speed Ranger transmissions in junkyards will very likely have the same or other problems or soon develop them. I'd go with a rebuild.

I don't see why a transmission shop couldn't rebuild a manual. If they can rebuild an automatic, they should be able to rebuild a manual. Find the most recommended shop and give them a call.

They might enjoy the diversion of doing something different than another FWD transaxle.

Building a RWD manual trans is an exercise in using a feeler gauge and a hydraulic press. I built a couple in the transmission class I took, and honestly building an automatic was a lot easier I think. I got down to being able to do a GM TH350 in about 20 mins that would shift to plan on a dyno.

The shop might enjoy it, or they would hate it. Usually no middle ground in these.

With Ford and Mazda we see very few manual trans failures. The ones that do go bad are either abused from racing or hard work, or with new 3 pedal drivers. Ford and I think Mazda as well don't even offer a reman service for manuals, they are all new replacements.

Have you tried changing the fluid? My Saturn was really tough to get into 1st gear when I got it a few months ago. I put Amsoil ATF in and now it shifts perfectly. All of the other gears are easier to shift in and out of as well. Could save you a lot of time and money.

The dealer parts department might not offer a rebuild kit, but that wouldn't stop someone in the aftermarket from building one.

O for most transmissions I can get all the internal parts no problem. Through the regular service channels they dont have "kits" for manuals. I know Ford Racing has some for T-5's.

All the replacement ones we have are new units, not reman. Last time I looked one up it was somewhat affordable. I think a TR-6060 in a GT500 was somewhere around US$3500ish range.
