When you do piston soak, some of the cylinder will be at TDC and some could be at BDC and some in between. Does it matter? Do you want entire stroke of the cylinder/bore cavity soaked or only the top of the piston?
Very good observation that some of the pistons are up and some are down. I have heard of people fillin the cylinders "all the way up with MMO" then cranking it to get as much of they can of it out before reinstall spark plugs (turn by habd or with spark plugs out crank the key) but in reality, the longer the soak the better. You are getting or dissoving and dislodging carbon from 1. the top of the cylinders 2. the rings. Un-stick the coked up gummed up carboned up (not sludged) rings, and the car runs and revs freer and you can feel it. There will also be a smoke show a la SeaFoam. You can do a piston soak over the course of three or four days if you want. 2 ounces a cylinder installed with a funnel appears to be the recommended. I have heard one person say something about how Seafoam soaking the rings could cause the ring to lose its comoression (?) but that has been determined to be less than reliable information (basically he said he put the spark plugs back in and one or more of his sylinders had no compression after the piston soak, so somehing loosened something. I can neither confirm nor deny but someone explained the workings of a cylinder head and said that is either impossible or unlikely.) Cranking the cylinders by hand would ensure "equal soak" while half are up and half are down.. but even in the ones that are "up" carbon comes off the top. A good way to check (if you dare) is take a clean penuch it to the top of the piston. Sort of redundant to say that it would come out black. And cover the engine bay when you crank it with no plugs, the Seafoam will come out as you want (no hydrolocking be they full or have 2oz) but it will go EVERYWHERE! Windshield, paint, everything. Cover it all.
The plume of smoke whether its carbon or not with Seafoam yields a freer-revving engine. I havd used heavy doses in multiple appsl of Seafoam to where the engine was so clean that NO smoke came out after the app, using brake booster line as well as piston soak. Over the top? Yes.. but couple that with 20-weight oil and people were impressed with what i did when they drove the car.
