Hey gregk24, in this day of outrageous over-inflated college tuition, kudos for paying your own way through school, holding a job, AND showing the responsibility to care and maintain your car.

From the good advice above, it sounds (no pun intended) like you should get many more miles out of your car in spite of the annoying start up tick.

It seems that there might be some opportunity to play with some different oils and/or additives to lessen the noise. Just keep an eye/ear on it to avert any catastrophy. Is there any chance that the previous valve adjustment was wrong or went bad?

To me the sound resembles timing chain noise/tensioner noise more than piston slap.

I can't speak to Hondas, but in GM engines piston slap is an annoyance only. BUT it is many times mis-diagnosed, you must be certain it is not something else like carbon knock or valve gear noises, etc.

Start running Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 or even 5w30 in it. I run it in my kids 1.8L Civic and the engine has quieted down quite a bit over the past 25000 miles. See if it helps after 15-20,000 miles. I change every 5000 and use a Purolator or Fram filter. You will notice it will clean the engine somewhat because the initial few OCI's will turn the oil jet black in 1500 miles and later it will take 3000 miles for the oil to get black. I don't think there is anything wrong with your engine. BTW, you don't need the expensive filter on a Honda. Use the Purolator classic or Fram Orange can.
