This is just for whatever amusement it brings to someone. I changed my wife's valve cover gasket on her 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.4 SOHC 4cyl 5-speed.

I got the valve cover gasket and the 4 spark plug seals. Oil had been leaking on the spark plugs (they were covered), and also leaking out the front a little. Enough to make it use around a quart every 1800 miles. I'm hoping it drops down to almost nothing, now. The gasket and seals were hard as a rock. Nice, fresh rubber in there, now.

She got it with around 120k on it, now it's around 150 or 160k. It was 2-2.5 quarts low on oil when she got it (4.2 quart capacity). Probably every OCI was dino, ran low, for 8000+ miles. Went to Castrol GTX 10w30 for about 25k miles, and now we are giving it some Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Can't have it leaking that stuff out, lol. BTW, no, the syn didn't make it leak, it was leaking before, and as far as I could tell, the leaking never changed. But, I've only had the GC in for about 2500 miles.

Maybe I can talk her into a couple of Auto-RX treatments, and then checking under the valve cover, again.

Is it just me or do mitsus attract the same type of owner? My friends galant and eclipse had the same type of 'care'

Doesn't look 1/2 bad considering....

Bad varnish I think. I couldn't wipe it off the valve cover (underneath). You can see in one of the pictures underneath the valve cover where the plugs would go in. It's really built up, there. Almost red like sap coming out of a pine tree, lol.

Yeah, must attract the same type of owners. Females :-P

For that many miles and time in use, That varnish is OK

As long as there is no sludge build up your gravy.

You could try Auto-rx. I would not expect a big improvment though. You engine looks good.

Like rg said--at least no sludge. You should do some kind of engine cleanup and follow the whole program and re-post in the future. Would be a great service for everyone here with before/after photos. I have serious doubts about any of those kinds of products, but I would be interested to see the after photos for sure.

Varnish shouldn't be an issue, considering it has 160k miles on the engine.

IMHO, varnish is pretty normal and nothing to really worry about.

As long as it doesn't look like this:
