Looking for a free picture editing program that is simple to use. I have a compact CoolPic Nikon camera and find the Nikon picture editing software a pain to use. Ed Hayes

X2 for gimp. Paint.net isn't half bad either. Similar layout to photoshop and allows very basic tweaking

Pixlr

You don't even need to download anything if you don't want to as the editor and express work within your browser. They do make a desktop version that is free as well.

Picasa is also a very simple but effective editor.

agree, it will do 90% of what I want.

My idea of editing is to crop, lighten or darken a picture and possibly change the contract. In addition, there are times when the color saturation needs to be changed. ED

Sounds like pixlr will fit the bill. Another option would be FastStone Image Viewer.

Paint.net is great for cropping/lightening etc.
picasa may be great but I'm not a fan of Google so I stick to trusty ol paint.net, just personal preference.

Eddie, define "editing".

Quattro Pete is right.

Try Picassa. It won't do all that Gimp will, (I use both), but it will do a lot. You can use "I'm feeling lucky", the auto adjust/fix or you can straighten, crop, add fill light or highlights etc.

It's also pretty ease to use.

Add Fastone to your list of programs to investigate.

Lol... Deja vu.

For the basics, I remember the basic photo view/edit app that Windows 7 came with did that. I clearly remember using it before for basic edits to photos for ebay. On times when I need a blur tool for serial numbers I used PhotoScape. Over time I just ended up using PhotoScape. It has all the basic tools I was looking for... crop, blur, white balance, resize, export.

I understand the love for GIMP. It provides great photo functionality for Linux users, but it is terribly slow, buggy, and memory leaky to use professionally. It is clearly not optimized for Windows or even not optimized at all. But I'm not one to complain. It's free.

I have enjoyed Paint.net in the past. I may have to revisit it again.

MS Photo Gallery, which you said you were going to try, is a good tool for this sort of stuff. It's pretty basic but also has nice organizing features, tagging, etc. I use it for that purpose. Recently got DXO Optics Pro 8 (two versions old) which was being offered for free, to do raw file editing and processing to jpg.
