My aunt has a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4L and 139k miles. Looking in the manual it recommends 5w20, but 5w30 is fine and 10w30 is fine if above 0 degrees, which in Phoenix it won't get close to that and it is garaged.

The thing is, I'm using Chevron Supreme HM 5w30 and the manual says it has to meet ILSAC GF-3 oil. I'm new to Hyundai's and have no idea what this is? Is the Chevron Supreme HM ok or should it go to the dealer?

Most oils on the shelf are gf-5 now. You're fine

Haha ok, I didn't know what all those special words and requirements are, thanks!

Your fine, i always run 5w30 in my 2.4 sonata.

Any current 5w30 is good. At our dealership that is all we use. Many of the new Hyundais have returned to 5w30 as the preferred grade, and 5w30 was always deemed acceptable.
On the 2.4 make sure that change intervals are not extended too much. The screens on the oil control valve that manages the CVVT are prone to blockage from oil breakdown, which leads to replacement.
I would also recommend buying the Hyundai oil filters for the vehicle. They are one of the best out there. The 2.4 is prone to knocking on startup if the filter has an improper flow rate or bypass pressure. Frams and E-cores are a big no-no on this motor.

That's what I'd run in it right there.

Me too. But only because I have so much of it in my stash (including Chevron HM, MaxLife and T5).

Both the 5w30 and the Chevron are great, you're doing it just right IMO.

I'll be moving our 2012 KIA to 5w30 once my 5w20 is used up.

My Santa Fe (same platform but SUV, and a couple years older) likes 5w30 in Pennzoil or Valvoline best. Any shell product is good too.

The International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is the group of U.S. and Japanese car makers, oil refiners, and chemical companies that determine the specifications for oil for the cars they make. GF-3 was the standard when that owner's manual was written, probably some time in '05. The current standard is GF-5, and is fully back-compatible with the old standards. After the ILSAC standard is determined API adopts it into their next Service Category, SN, at the current time.

I used 5W30 PP in my sons 2011 Sonata until he traded it for a Genesis coupe. His Sonata ran great on PP... I should have bought that car before he traded it. Nuts.
