Anybody know why there are so few places to rent pick up trucks?

The places that do have pickup truck rentals (Hertz, Menards, Home Depot) charge a serious premium.

I know they are a bit more expensive than most rental cars but what gives?

They would get EXTREMELY abused, I suspect, and a rental company would lose money on them quick.

All rental cars are abused. They could have more potential for abuse when people go off-roading, haul equipment, and scratch the paint and ding. They could always charge for the damages.

This.

Many years ago my Dad wanted to haul some decorative rocks and called the local rental place. They asked what he was going to do with the truck and he said that he was going to bring home some decorative rocks. They replied that they would not rent him a truck due to potential damage. He then asked, "what do you expect people to do with pickup when they rent one, haul pillows? Isn't this the point of renting a truck?"

The place actually did him a favor because he found a U-Haul rental for much less.

Exactly, love the pillow comment! Its true. Aren't there quite a few solutions for bed liners that could really protect bed?

So why doesn't somebody get some quality used pickups with some bedliners and rent them out?

I think people would pay a decent dollar for this.

I also think if there was a way to make money doing this the big rental companies would already be doing it.

Used to be you could get a ranger from budget, rate code "X", for $20/day.

Had a friend try this, he was all set until he went to the lot and got... a ford windstar instead!

Riddle: What are the two fastest cars on earth?

Here in Salt Lake City and many other cities you can rent per day with a per mile charge pretty well anything from a Prius, Mazda 3, Escape, Focus, Mini Cooper, Kia Sportage, to a F150.

Quite popular here. The max per day for the truck is $11.50 plus .79 cents a mile.

Uhaul plus some other places are making $$ with this.

Hilarious and true. I know anytime I get a rental I basically track test it at every stoplight! I don't know why anyone would ever consider buying a car from a rental fleet.

Trucks are readily available to rent around here, but I've never paid attention to the cost.

A lot of pickups that are rented have their capacity limited in some way. When my sister moved out of state, my dad rented a Ranger from Hertz to help her move furniture...when he got out to the parking lot he found that the truck had a hard tonneau cover installed that was clearly not intended to be removed. He had to go back and rent a cargo van. Likewise, a lot of rental pickups are 1/2 crew cab super short bed pickups. That makes them mostly people movers and not a lot of things heavy enough to damage the truck could be put in the bed. I don't recall if those even had a trailer hitch installed.

Pickups are probably more likely to be abused than just about any other rental. I remember helping my mom at work when I was a kid and seeing a bill for around $100 to remove sand from a rented Ford Bronco. Not a pickup, but close.

I once took a rented Dodge Ram back that was making some very unpleasant and loud noises, but that wasn't due to abuse.

Hmmmmm. Seems like you answered your own question as to why companies would be reluctant to establish a truck rental fleet.

These kind of values kind of disgust me and it only costs everyone more in the long run. I treat other's property with the same respect I would expect from them, whoever it belongs to. Where's the logic that people feel they have the right to abuse stuff just because it doesn't belong to them? I never understood this lack of integrity and I never will.

No, what he's saying is that people with a lack of values who abuse the property of someone else disgust him. He's also saying that he (as well as most mature adults) is digusted by someone with such a low moral character.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Trucks get abused, another reason never to buy a used one.

I work my truck, by the time I sell it their won't be much left.

Many if not most car rentals are for business travelers in mind. Although there are people who abuse rental cars, most mature business travelers don't. Pickup trucks are used for entirely different purposes and do get damaged even without intentional abuses. Overloading to save another trip, going off road, etc are very common on a rental pickup.

So you buy used rental cars too. I get it..

A car is made to be driven. In the rental agreement it doesn't say how you must drive it, except within the legal limits of the law..

I think accusing someone of low moral character that drives a rental car hard is a little misguided. But you know what they say about opinions.

Cheers!

Wow. Just because something doesn't explicitly say to not abuse it, doesn't mean it's OK.

Let's put it in another analogy... You're skinny and healthy, I'm obese and live off of Cheetos. We both have the same medical insurance. You incur zero cost, I incur triple what I pay in. What happens to your premium?

You think the car companies are going to pinpoint abusers (though they could by obd scanners or gps)? It's far easier to charge all renters more for the reduced life and increased maintenance required.

Can we get any further off topic here folks? I was just trying to understand the pickup truck rental market! Please focus on the topic, thanks.
