Based on tons of recommendations and reviews, I picked up a nice new Marlin 336W today for $379. I've been out of hunting since college as I never got my hunter's safety until this year and my family sold our only rural land where I could have gotten away without it. I've got access to a collection of some more powerful rifles if I ever do need something bigger but wanted something new for myself to keep here at home. Anyone got any tips? I've already headed over to the Marlin owners forum as well as the lever guns forum that someone posted a link to here. Good stuff.

Nice weapon and excellent price!

I almost pulled the trigger on a 30-30 but in the end decided that Marlin in 44mag would be the one.

My Uncle has a 30-30 (and a real neat 30-30 Blackhawk) and has a real nice handload using 150gn and I think 748? Real accurate round.

Congrads!

Bill

PS: Photos please!

I have the Marlin 336 SS in .30-30. Very nice gun for a carbine. Accurate out to about 150 yds, probably the longest distance I would want to attempt a shot at a deer. It really likes the Remington 170 grain rounds. I also have an 1895 CB in .45-70; its the most accurate rifle I own. Took a black bear with it this spring in Canada.

I went to a gun show today and was hoping to find a deal there. Fat chance! Man, I have NEVER seen a gun show so well-attended. Then when I went to the sporting goods store where I bought this rifle (Academy) the gun counter was the busiest part of the store. The combination of people's fear over the election and Christmas made for brisk sales, I guess.

Bill-
How well does the Blackhawk handle the bottle-neck 30-30? I'm asking because I had a gunsmith tell me that bottle-neck rounds in revolvers expand at the shoulder and push back enough to lock up the cylinder.
I guess that could be true, and explains why few revolvers use bottle-neck cartridges. But I don't know if that is a fact.

Congrats on your new rifle, Brian. No real advice, you'll have to decide for yourself whether to scope it or not. You might consider a peep sight for it- at least if I had a nice new(or old used!) Marlin I'd be tempted to try that.

Re: .30-30 Blackhawk- Really? Wow!

I once shot a Ruger Blackhawk chambered for .30 Carbine, and remember their ill fated extra long cylinder Blackhawk .357 Maximum. But I never knew they made any in .30-30. I bet it's an attention getter- at both ends.

Yeah I've got to figure out the scope situation. Man, I love the feel of a nice new rifle in the hands....

You know something guys? I may be wrong with the Blackhawk. It prob is a 30 carbine... (its a .30 something)

I've shot the rifle a few times (it is for sure a 30-30 as it is the same round as my cousins Winchester (pre 64) and the blackhawk once. But did not load it or unload it.

Now I have to call my Uncle Sunday and find out...

Stay tuned...

Ok, it IS .30 carbine. One thing I do remember is it is prob the loudest handgun I've ever heard (with ear plugs in).

Louder than my 4" ported 44mag, 7.5" incl .454 casull or snub nose .357 mag.

Sorry about that guys.

I really shoot (

get it shoot.. ah nevermind) for 100% accuracy with all my posts.

Take care, bill

I went to one last month over here. I regularly attend this one, but I've never seen anything like this. I asked alot of the old timers and neither had they. Both large parkinglots were filled up, both large fields on either side of the parking lots were filled up and there was a line to get in the building because it was at capacity. You had to wave down a dealer to get their attention if you wanted to buy a gun, then there was a wait to get a seat at the table to fill out your paperwork. I was talking to the owner where I bought my pistol and he said he'd sold 235 guns before lunch that morning. All the guys I talked to were there because of the election. So was I.

That's ALMOST the way it was here. There were still a few dealers that weren't tooooo busy but there were also some pretty so-so guns. But I had to park pretty far out and carry my toddler in my arms so it was an experience. Well, I bet there may be some who are genuinely concerned, but I have a feeling a lot were like me and using the whole thing as a good excuse to add to the gun collection....

I'm shopping scopes online right now but admit I only want something REALLY cheap. Anyone have any recommendations? I know cheap scopes are generally a mistake but I'm trying to avoid spending $6-700 on this purchase in one weekend.

I have not. Sorry.

Only my 22lr Lever actions (well most of them) are scoped. My other lever actions are iron sights.

I'm with Bill on this one, can't beat a Simmons for the money. I had Nightforce, Leupold, Burris, Tasco, Simmons, and a few others. For a starter, entry level scope, or just something that's inexpensive you can't beat the Simmons.

Midway Shooters Supply might be running them on sale too!

Checked both of those. Is there any point in buying one of the cheap scopes like the Simmons Blazer????
