Picked up a 2003 Toyota 4Runner V6!

I’ve worked on a few of these. Great cars. You don’t have to worry about rust but I’ve had to put rejection stickers on several of these at the dealership when they come for a state inspection because the frame rots like crazy on these from rust.

No more than any other BOF vehicle that gets neglected in a highly corrosive environment.

Nobody else thinks that 4K for a rather rough 23 YO 215K 4Runner seems a bit rich?
I am probably getting too old to see how this is a deal.
Welcome to 2025, SUV, & Toyota reputation...
That's why I don't buy them.
Though, If it's been down south...no rust!

These things are legend. I’d never worked on one until my son brought a ‘2019 over. Granted, it’s newer, but it seemed like it had more steel per square inch beneath it than my 2018 f150. And in spite of being smaller, everything was generally easy to get to and work on.

I went ahead and ordered some fluids/filters for my 4Runner. Here’s the list:

-Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30
-Champ Oil Filter
-Air filter and cabin filter
-Valvoline gear oil 80W90
-Valvoline Dex for power steering fluid
-Aisin super long life coolant
-Brake fluid at work

I’ve replaced both low beam bulbs because one was out and replaced my rear reflector assembly because it was cracked.

A lady (with her daughter at her side) in my apartment complex was also quite bothered by the fact that I have no plates, and proceeded to tell me I should park somewhere else (There are no assigned spots) and that’s it’s illegal and I can get towed. I told her I just bought the vehicle a few days ago and that I’m getting it registered on Friday…I even made sure my apartment complex knew and they were okay with it. She must of had a bad day or something, to go out her way to say something is beyond me.

Did a quick little rinse-less wash with some ONR and hit the paint with a spray sealant. Shines up fairly nice. Threw in a new battery from interstate, air filter, cabin filter, and a cheap blower motor. New fluids are going in next week! I’m also going to do a road force balance on the tires and eventually do a front brake job due to warped rotors.

Had a car die and I bought a replacement and transferred the tags. Less than 24 hours later a cop shows up at my door and said, one of your neighbors has nothing better to do than call us all day. Anyways you dont have any plates on the car down there and I dont care, Im just gonna stand here for a few minutes so she can watch me warn you. Also, as long as you dont drive the car there is nothing illegal about it. Hope you have a good day and sorry for the inconvenience. I was laughing the whole time.

So far I’ve changed the oil and filter, brake fluid, rear differential fluid, and power steering fluid. Last thing I’m going to do is a coolant flush. Probably not going to touch the transmission fluid due to the age and mileage. The grandfather I bought my 4Runner from bought the same year and trim as mine, but it has more miles…230k. He’s having me look over it.

I did this on an 05 Matrix with 160k and performance kept improving after each D/F. Even though it seemed fine before hand. Easier than doing an oil change.
