needed to go down to Columbus to change the oil in the vibe (it's my buddy's car, but his last couple cars never got oil changes, only replenished when they got low. this way i know it's getting done- he's like a little brother to me) knew he wouldn't be home until 5:45, so i went down a few hrs early, and went to pick n pull to see if i could find some bits that were broken on my car( mostly cosmetics that could affect resale)

now it wasn't in the best part of town, but what junkyard is?

cost me a buck to get in, picked up a wheelbarrow and headed off to the chrysler section.(i had looked online to make sure they had some 2nd gen neons on the lot, they had 4-5)
walk back there, and every one of 'em had all the parts i needed.
from car 1 (2001, purple):
i got a complete airbox (only part of the stock intake i don't have, prev owner sliced it up and ran the CAI through it, so it'd look stock when you pop the hood) and the cowling that covers the wiper motor, and the cabin air intake - between the hood & windshield.(mine has a big crack right along the side of the far pass mounting screw. couldn't get any adhesive i tried to work - kept pulling itself apart.)

from car 2 (2000, green w/ some home painted floral graphics on the hood):
Center Console (Mine has 4 little screw holes from a prev. phone mount), and the upper Dash panel - someone had already pulled it and set it in the trunk ( mine cracked in the sun a month or two ago, currently "repaired" w/ a carpeted dash cover)

I went in mainly to find the cowl, which lists for over $100, thought maybe i'd find a dash... ended up only spending $70 for everything.

if i'd had more time, and had brought the parts list with me, i would have pulled the parts to add cruise to my car, but oh well.
my first trip to a DIY junk yard, but i can say i'd definitely go back, if i need something else, and if their other stores are like this one, definitely recommend taking a trip to your local pick-n-pull next time you need something.

i loved junkyards that you could pull the parts yourself i used to know the owner of one in nj years ago he became very very wealthy from that place

on the way home i noticed the console still had a some "wet car interior moldy" smell, as well as caked on..stuff..
so i stopped at a DIY carwash, sprayed it down(all plastic anyway) and washed the car while i was at it.

I was at one today too!!

My goal was a tail light for an Olds 88. The trunk wasn't open, so I took out the backseats and crawled through the access panel. Good times...

Nanny Bloomberg is why. Why should you get to maintain your vehicle through your own hard work? Just make sure you are not drinking those Big Gulp sodas.

HAH!
i was drinking a 32 oz cherry coke when i typed my original post..

Mine had a tire pile up until a year or two ago. It was like climbing an ankle twisting jello mold searching for that perfect size.

We have at least a half-dozen self-serve junkyards in the Chicago area. I go all the time.

The Pick-n-Pull chain is great because like was mentioned earlier, has a searchable inventory online.

They fancied up ours. Put in concrete and made everything clean and tidy.

I don't want to go back now. But, I don't have anything that needs it right now.

Still, I found what was probably the best ink pen I've ever owned at the U-Pull-It. Nothing fancy, but felt perfect and ink flowed like it was made by elves.

Well done.

I'm sure a Pick-n-Pull would go over big in Central Park.
That's the key to success in business: location, location, location.

I recently visted one a couple of towns over from me. I had heard that they had some old VW's. They had advertised a special Saturday sale...all you can carry out for $100. Pleased to find about 10-12 60's-70's VWs. It took some creative use of clothing, but I managed to leave with two nice speedos, a nice fuel gauge, two carbs,an air cleaner, a six-volt Bendix push-button radio, two wheels and some miscellaneous small parts. All in all a good day!
