Pick an engine - 25HP 4-stroke

The Honda 9.9 needs some lower unit work and the mid section needs replacing (corrosion) so we are just going to retire it from the boat it is on and replace it with a 25, which is more appropriate for the 18ft aluminum boat it is on.

Prerequisites:
- 25HP
- 4-Stroke
- EFI

Honda's 25 is still carbureted last time I checked, so that's off the table.

Our Honda marina also sells Merc, and the Merc 25 is EFI, so that's option #1.

Our neighbours own a boat dealership and they sell Yamaha (and Honda). The Yamaha 25 is also EFI, so that's option #2.

I did price the Merc, it was reasonable. Have not gotten a Yamaha price yet.

IIRC, Merc doesn't actually make some of their small outboards, they are made by Tohatsu. Not sure what models this applies to.

The Merc is an inline triple, the Yamaha is a twin. Yamaha is lighter.

What about Suzuki? They look competitive in this market.
 
Yamaha is the only motor i will leave the shore with.

have had 8 different boats with old 2 stroke yamahas on them and 2 with 250 SHO’s. between all of them i’ve only ever rebuilt one tilt and trim as a maintenance item.

currently i have a 97’ model 150 2 stroke and a 22’ 250 SHO. the 150 runs at 5800rpm till the cows come home on the skeeter zx176c and the SHO is like driving a corvette on the zx250.

key to any boat motor is making sure you keep a good fuel/water separator on them, keeping ethanol at bay with additive or just buying ethanol free fuel, making sure you flush them if you run in the salt and only running when in water for the impeller. i don’t use ear muffs out of water because plenty of air still makes it to the impeller.
 
I believe all those 4 stroke outboards are very similar and you cannot go wrong with any of them. Honda is a one of kind outboard and not similar to Yamaha, Nissan, Suzuki, Mercury and Tohatsu.

Buy the 30hp Suzuki and replace the decals with these.😉

I'm a pretty big Yamaha fan. Not only on marine applications, but for all toys. I can't ever remember a Yamaha giving me grief, even the old worn out late 70's 3 wheeler I traded a bag of grass clippings for back in the mid 90's. It started on the first kick just about every time.
 
I’d probably go Yamaha for the lighter weight. But you can’t go wrong with a Mercury either.
