Hi,

Here is a some photos off my Toyota Corolla for the last 3 Oil Changes.

 -

The Purolater is $4, The Bosch is $6 and the Supertech is $2.

The car ran fine with all of the filters, the UOAs were excellent and no noises coming from the engine. No Leaks on any of them.

What would you use? Why?

Here is a shot of the filters along the AC Delco for my Silverado. PF59 for $3.50

Thanks in advance for any comments!

Take care, Bill

PS: The grit you see in the caps and rubber valves is from the opening of the filters. (Dremel)

The Bosch & SuperTech look pretty similar. Any of them is probably as good as another. Purolator would probably be my pick, but not because of the pictures as it looks the least sturdy, but it does have most exposed filter area. My 2c worth.

I'd go with the Purolator (on sale) or ST based on price.

But, if it will fit in your car, I would up-size to the Purolator L14477 which is a little longer. Unfortunately, ST doesn't make any up-sized 4967.

Y'know, I'm findin' it kinda hard to read the classifieds with all those filters in the way... there are some good deals on guns...

Okay, to answer your question, I'd use any of them. Does the Supertech in that size now come as an Ecore? If so, I'd use that.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing!

Hmany miles on each filter and were there any tears or separation of the media from the end caps? (curious about the Super Tech in particular based on all the bashing--here's another real world example--how'd that baby hold up?)

Thanks for the laugh!

(There are great deals for firearms here in Utah!) Just picked up a Marlin 1894 in 357mag.. FUN!)

Every ST I've seen has been the non-ecore style.

I cut open every filter I use for every outfit
I change for (currenty 7) and never had a bad filter.

On my Corolla filters, The STP, Bosch, ST and Mobil1 filters look the same.

All had between 4500-5000 miles on them. Nothing wrong with any filter. After this, I cut with a blade the elements and everything is perfect!

I figured putting 3 of them together is better so we can see if anyone stands out.

The Purolator's was a little thinner (flimsy) and if you look at the photo you can see a little wavy action going on there. But the media was intact and filtered fine.

Ahhhhhhhhh, ain't they Cuuuuuuuuuute Hehe, I use the same size for my Corollas. Tiny little suckers

They are... Work great too! (and it's nice you can get a grip on them to tighten/loosen..)

Drew, It's not the size of the filter that matters. It's how it's used

hehehe....

Thanks for the replies!

Glad to see that the Super Techs are holding up well after 5,000 miles---LubeOwner said they wouldn't last longer than 3,000 miles without the media tearing or rupturing--glad to see someone else with a different experience as I've been using 'em for years with no problems and very long engine life and would like to continue using them due to their availability and price.

I wasn't able to sort out the bypass from the pictures. I would use the cheapest one that has a threaded end bypass as long as it was made in the USA. I can see USA in the one picture of the Purolator, but many of them are made in Thailand or Malaysia now. Let Bosch or Purolator justify their higher price.

When did I say they would all rupture after 3,000 miles? Remember my sampling pool is 12,000 filters per year. All I have ever said is that the low end Champ filters frequently fail under manufacturer recommended drain intervals. I still have not seen one of the WIX built NAPA filters fail under ANY drain interval.

I had a Toyota Dealer sell me some filters that are longer than the OEM and said it's spec'd for the 1.8 as an filter to use if your out of stock for the shorter ones. So never stocks the shorter ones for the Corolla and only stocks this one since its ok with Toyota and fits more units.

I called Toyota and they ok'd the use of this filter..

Since the engine is theirs till 60k... I'll go with the ok.

here is a Photo of it along side a New Purolator and Supertech for the same engine.

I've heard of People trying the Motorcraft FL400 (I think thats the number.. it's the one for a Ford taurus V6 3.0) and reporting it worked, there was startup noises when he used it...

I tried one and it does fit, but did not use it.

The Toyota one in the photo above I'm using right now and the first 1,500 miles everything is normal (no long oil light to go out when starting, no noises etc).
grin.gif
And it's been in the low 30's at night..

So, I'm going to use the Toyota filters (since I got them for $2.70 each)and the rest of the Purolator (got 9 more of them), the Supertechs I have (about 5)and when I run out of filters,(when the car has 140k
grin.gif
) I'll see what we have avail at that time.

This is of course if I don't go out and buy another car like the Matrix or Vibe.. Then my Oil Filters will be used up quicker.

The smaller filters don't bother me at all...

Take care, Bill

PS: I will cut the Toyota filter and post in a month or so when I get 4-5k on it.

The ones for Camary's also fit except most aftermarket brands don't extend the center tube past the length of the standard Corolla size. Probably no biggie

Is that what the Toyota Dealer sold me then? Ones for a Camry?

Thanks, bill

I think so. That one looks about how much longer the Camry filters are.

I knew I would take heat for my smaller filter comment
