I remember he was very sick for a few of the episodes requiring actual hospital visits. At 53 its way to young, and I enjoyed watching the show and his crew.

I just read that on CNN. Sad to hear that. He was my favorite captain on the show. I guess that lifestyle can really catch up to you. Staying up for seems like forever, smoking like a chainsaw, fatty food to eat and STRESS.

This is not surprising at all. He ate garbage, smoked like it was going out of style. It was only a matter of time. Enjoyed him and the show though.

+1

I don't watch much television, but I have seen that show a couple times. I have to say that, while I'm saddened to hear of his passing, I'm not surprised.

His health issues a year or so ago should have been a wake up call, but he simply slid back into the same self destructive health habits and they finally caught up to him.

I hope his boys and those around him will learn from what happened to him and take control of their own health. Otherwise I suspect a similar fate awaits them at an early age.

I only saw a couple episodes of IRT, but I thought it was pretty cool, and dangerous job. Always was a fan of Deadliest catch too.

More favorites of mine still include mythbusters, Junkyard Wars (Back when they still had Robert Llewelyn (sorry for the spelling robert!) and Kathy Rogers.
Back on topic, I liked Phil he was a hardarse but he was tough. Have fun on the big crab fishing boat in the sky phil.

Not terribly surprised, unfortunately.

Phil did not take care of himself. On the show, it appeared that his diet consisted of Ciggies, Red Bull, and stress.... in equal portions.

My best friend's Dad went the same way. He refused to take care of himself, even after he knew that his health was in jeopardy.

The thing is about people like that, they either live to be 90 or die at 50. Unfortunately, he was on the small end of the spectrum. Chain smoking, loads of stress, and little sleep will catch up to you eventually.

I read somewhere that 50% of smokers will die of tobacco related illness, and 50% of those will die around age 50. So 1 in 2 chance of dying because of an illness directly related, 1 in 4 chance of dying at a premature age. Those are bad odds.

But I digress, RIP Phil, I wish more Americans had the heart and work ethic that this guy did.

I know some people that fit this profile, and I believe that it is an integral part of their self-image to be this way. I don't think they have any inclination to take care of them selves, it just isn't who they want to be.

They joke a lot about "Anyone can quit smoking, it takes a man to die from cancer", but that really is their attitude.
