Kris Kristofferson has passed away

Kris is one fellow who lived one hell of an interesting life. From starting out poor as he spoke about to serving in the military, flying helicopters over Vietnam. Leaving a promising career in the military to go after a music career his family turned their backs on him about.
When his music career was going no place the man took jobs flying helicopters over the Gulf Of Mexico ferrying oil rig workers. He often spoke about his times sitting idle in the choppers on the rigs was a time he wrote lots of his early songs. To even landing a helicopter in Johnny Cash's yard he was so desperate to get his demo music in Johnny's hands personally since he had tried and failed. To end up with the massive music career and even a small acting career , he seemed to do it all at one time or another. I was a big fan of his when he became a member of The Highwaymen with Waylon, Willy and Johnny Cash. Yes, it makes one really start to feel old when all of the music and film stars one has followed thru life start to leave us behind. God Bless those like him who were talented to bring happiness and joy into some folks lives. Hope he is in a better place with his former band mates.

One of the great songwriters. In addition to what Sammy said, he was also a football and rugby player and had two degrees in literature--one from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

I never knew this was his song until I heard it on the radio driving through the Texas Hill Country on a rainy night:

He also had a very accomplished military career he walked away from:
Kristofferson, under pressure from his family, joined the US Army and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant attaining the rank of Captain. He became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker, Alambama. He also completed US Army Ranger school.

Kristofferson was a pretty storied veteran, he was a Ranger School graduate and pilot, but I don't think he went to 'Nam according to his bio. He was stationed in Germany mainly and was offered a position teaching at West Point but left in 1965, just as the War was becoming becoming partially an American one on the ground starting with Ia Drang....
