Read;
He consumes an awful lot of very highly saturated/trans/animal fats, highly processed items, etc.
It really depends on just how his body's metabolism, chemistry, genetics handle/process (or cannot handle/process) that diet as to just what his actual longevity will be in the long run.
But regardless, he absolutely would be better off if he got his calorie needs met with a healthier/fresher, diet which included more balanced, and less harmful fats.

Considering he is the winningest person in Olympic history, Id say he knows what he is doing.

I think you guys assume a bit too much and take that editorialized list of foods that Phelps supposedly wolves down just a but too much at face value. The list is also quite vague. Don't you think Phelps has a nutritionist working with him?

what are they doing for food over there? 12k calories of chinese food? or is he on the super size me diet?

Come on, they bring their own food and stick with that as long as their competition lasts. No athelete can afford to get Ming's revenge.*

There is another reason why I doubt that any athlete stuffs himself with what amounts to heavy and voluminous piles of food. Do you see any swimmers that have a stuffed look? They really don't have the time to digest huge amounts of food. It's obvious they can't afford to run around like Jabba after the buffet at the Mirage. Instead they most certainly make optimum use of energy and nutrient rich shakes laden with protein and carbs, and they also drink fluids full of of electrolytes before each competition. If they have a day off, they may well have a big meal.

*Ming is supposedly Montzuma's distant cousin

I don't think that they did take their own food.

There was absolute outcry is Oz, when our teams were told that they are eating/drinking only stuff provided for them.

They did the rounds of the Olympic eatery on TV the other day. They are offering everything, kosher, halal, western, eastern, fruit/veges, and there's a maccas as well.

As to athletes eating, pure carbs and fats are hydrocarbons (give or take), and burn ash free (CO2 and Water), they need them for energy, without having too much load on their kidneys.

Watched a doco on some guys dragging sleds across Antarctica. Their "diet" was mostly pork fat.

Besides, I doubt anyone could eat 12,000 calories of vegetables in a day.

They were the dogs, humans dragging sleds across Antarctica.

Fair enough on the US taking their own food IMO.

I know Oz Olympic team protested the no take food ban, but I still think they are eating at the village.

I wasn't totally sure.

I suppose the driver needs his strength, too.

I don't know if it worked out that way.

By the way, I did find a picture of Phelps with an 8 inch tall stack of American pancakes in front of him.

Pasta, pasta, and more pasta. Rice. Bread. Pancakes. Eggs. Fish. Red meat. High carb foods. And some with high glycemic content. At least in cycling, if you ride with a high heart rate, you burn more sugar than fat. Pretty soon, your body trys to tap into the fat supply but it is slower "burning". Lower heart rates burn more fat. In the elite classes, resting heart rates are REALLY low.

One of our few medal hopes in the rowing is down with the runs....he's lost 4kg.Hope he has recovered for his final tonight. Most of our food is made in China....why reimport it when you can get it straight from the source?

I don't disagree with any of that. But I don't believe that an athlete will eat a huge pile and compete a couple hours later. They'd all have a bulging gut just from being physically stuffed. They'd also have to go all the time. Consider how much time required to digest food. Liquids are different of course.

Of course. It's carbo loading at it's finest. Most will eat breakfast the day of and then the rest is gel carbs. The 12,000 calories consumed isn't TO compete. It's to refuel AFTER competition.

8 from 8 - seems to be working OK for him.

Wonder how he'd go with BITOG as his dietary advisers ?

Awesome effort.

I was speaking/commenting more to his all around, LONG TERM health/well being then to his competition success.
But even this is determined more by his body's/system's individual fat metabolism/chemical breakdown of harmful fats than anything else.

And yes, I agree with mori that anyone at his level is being guided by a very competent (hopefully) nutritionist.

They showed what he eats on TV last night. Not a vegetable in sight. Pasta, pizza, pancakes, high energy drinks which are not healthy. Sure aint no nutritionist working on his 'diet'
