This weekend when I was changing the oil in my Jeep, I volunteered to change the oil in a friend’s 1987 Mazda 626 as well. I used the Supertech version of the Fram PH3593A oil filter.

This filter is quite short and a bit hard for me to get to from the top, but I managed. It would be a lot easier in the future if I could find a longer version filter for this application. I’m good with truck, John Deere, industrial, and Jeep filters but have no reference materials to refer to in looking for a longer filter for this application.

Any suggestions?

I think a PH2948A/WIX 51347 will work for you if you can handle the gasket difference. I don't think you'll find it in a SuperTech due to the limited numbers that they put on the shelf.

Here's what both filters look like in Wix

Here's the Fram spec's on it. It lists Mazda as well as others

Since Wal-Mart dropped the ST-3950, I have been avoiding downsizing to the ST 3593A. In the past, I have found the Fram had half the media area as the ST and doubt it's media is twice as good. I now find the Purolator L 10193 is a big empty can the same as Fram. I plan to check the STP S 3950 next if I can find one. Note, these are big suckers, 3'' high x 3.5'' around.

As far as I can tell, my local Walmart doesn't have anything else with a bypass the 20 mm thread except maybe a Fram.

Note how the larger WIX still has the same flow rating as the smaller one. Oversize?

They rate most of their common automotive filters at 9-11 gpm. There are some exceptions ..but they're limited in number. Even a TT Audi gets a 7-9gpm filter from WIX. I think that most cars would be lucky to push 5gpm at the upper end.
