I just did the first oil change on my new 2021 Silverado 5.3. Owners manual says filter should be PF63E. The filter that came off the truck was a PF63 and it says on the filter , "replace with a PF63. I called several Chevy dealers parts dept. and they said I can use either.

I'm using M1 Fill syn EP 0W/20. Plan on running approx 5,000 miles between changes. I live in TX so it rarely gets very cold.

I've read where the bypass PSI is higher on the PF63E.

What is the consensus on this issue? Or other filter recommendations?

Thanks

I’m guessing they’re printing the new filters to use a PF63. My 2018 OEM filter said use a PF63E. ACDelco is redesigning the filters. I haven’t found any of the PF63, just the PF63E around here. There was some posts about it on here a while back.

I thought the PF63 and PF63E had different bypass pressure ratings, with the PF63 around 15 and PF63E around 22. If that's still the case, my 4.3 Silverado calls for the PF63E and I wouldn't use a PF63 instead to avoid bypass events and lower differential pressures.

Here is another article that mentions the PF63E. It doesn’t discuss the 63 vs 63E but touches on the 63E, 48 and 64. I have not had a chance to check it’s accuracy.

This article supports the premise that the PF63E has a different bypass pressure than the PF63. 150 kpa = 22 psi

I have the 2019 Silverado 1500 Custom, 5.3L V8. Owner's Manual says PF63E on page 426.

Yeah, GM likes to make things so difficult. But then owners manuals have been printed long before the vehicle was made and the changes taken place. But they went back to just PF63. If you really want to get technical go by the actual part number 12707246 that the dealer uses and is what is updated in their system.

Makes sense but there's always the legal or liability claims associated with owner manual recommended parts being wrong and not changed. You would think that there would be a recall or customer notification somewhere?

Same with my 2017 & 2018 5.3L’s … after the first PF63’s I use PF63E

Speculation aside … the post by the Critic says it’s an assembly line issue because the PF63E is too long
