PF61 instead of a PF46

I'm considering using an AC Delco PF61 instead of a PF46 for my '02 Silverado's next oil change. I like the extra capacity of the PF61. I know the PF61 doesn't have an ADBV like the PF46, but that shouldn't matter since the filter is on the bottom of the engine, right? Is there any reason that I shouldn't use a PF61? I've already taken measurements and verified that I've got plenty of clearance.

Shouldn't hurt a thing,i've used non ADBV on my 350 alot
of times with the vertical located filter.

I'm assuming your vehicle has a vertical filter mount.

Just to be on the safe-side & after an overnight shutdown - a week or-so after installing the PF-61, I would uninstall the new filter & check it's oil contents. If it stays full of oil like my PF-61 does, then you should be fine.

With my Chevy Colorado, I don't need to uninstall the filter to check oil content. I have a huge reservoir of oil that sits in a channel just above the filter. Makes a nasty oil mess (5-6 ounces) - even before complete uninstallation. So lately, I have been drilling a small hole near the bottom of the filter first. This allows a nice, neat drain & eliminates any mess.

Hey, very timely topic. I was just about to pose exactly the same question but with a different number filter. My new used Chevy 1999 7.4 L motorhome takes the Wix 51060 filter which is about 5.2 inches long. The only longer filter I find with the same thread in my Wix catalog is the 51794 (7.8"!), but it does not have the antidrainback of the 51060. My filter mounts bolt upright, so I figure who needs antidrainback. Guess I could try it out.

On my fords the longer filter was actually stated on some filter websites as being the longer version of the shorter filter, but not in the Chevy case.

My vehicle does have a vertical filter mount so the top of the filter faces the ground. The filter retains oil so it's a mess when I change it. Since it does retain oil, I'm thinking the PF61's lack of an ADBV shouldn't be an issue. I'm wondering if the lack of an ADBV and different filter size will cause any oil pressure differences I should be concerned about?

Top of filter being the dome end, right? That's how mine is, the dome is straight down. I think the mess could be worse without the anti-drainback valve because then the oil will also come out the little holes, not just the center tube, when you remove it.

The anti-drainback valve has nothing to do with oil pressure except on start up. With a horizontal mount filter and no anti-drainback, the filter would be mostly empty and would have to fill before oil gets to the pressure sender and engine. Thus the gauge would not come up right away, similar to if you had just done an oil change and don't prefill your filters.

The only way our verticle filters could drain back woudl be if there was a syphon action or some such phenomenon--maybe when the oil cools it will pull some out, but not all.

Of course, there's always the issue if the longer filter sticks out the bottom and gets knocked off on a rock.

You'll be fine, but if you have a major concern about the ADBV, the PureOne that crosses to the PF61 has an ADBV. Patman has has excellent luck with the K&N cross on his Corvette, and it has the ADBV also. Get a P1 at AAP, and go...

The top of the filter is the dome end, that's correct.

I've considered other brands, but prefer to stick with OEM, whenever possible. I also think that AC Delco filters are a bargain at $3.50 a piece.

I never considered the additional mess I'm going to have when changing a filter without an ADBV. I guess I'll drill a hole in the filter to let it drain first, as suggested.

Some put a freezer bag over the filter to extend past the upper lip and then unscrew to contain the mess. Now in my dangle angel Fords you could change the filter cold and a lot less dripped out. May work for the bolt upright. Well, I guess its bolt downright. I am mixed up. Always thought of the threaded part as the top. Better get my directions straight.

Went to the parts store and they wanted around $13 for the long filter and only $6 for the standard one, so I bought the standard one. I ran the long filter on my Ford for 9500 miles and when I tore it apart it looked fine, so I figuer these 5 inch long filters are more than adequate.

Without the ADBV, "some" oil will drain out of the block back through the filter, like in the oil passages that are higher than the filter mount.
As long as the filter remains full, it should be rather incosequential.
