PF-52 filters

Hi,

Today I put on an AC-delco PF-52. I also had on hand a supertech and an ultraguard gold UPF-52. The ST and the ultraguard are the same length, probably a half incl chorter than the regular delco. Also, inside, the internals looked completely different with about 3/4" at the start just being smooth metal, and then lots of large holes instrad of rows of smaller ones.
The ST always gives me noise at startup on cold days, even with syth. I now worry about the UPF filters, as they are the same length as the ST.
I know about longer filters being better because of their increased capacity and filtering media, but does anyone have any ideas on length and startup noises (tapping)?

I really can't see any difference bc in both cases with the vertical application (I assume) both filters will be full. May just be that the anti-drainback valve is better onthe filter which procuces less noise. That filter would (I assume) keep the oil gallery flooded at the discharge fo the filter.

When using the Super Tech filter...When you change the oil is there still oil up in the engine when you remove the filter? You know, you loosen the filter and it is seems like about 1/2 qt comes gushing out and makes a mess? If so that means the anti-drain back valve is doing it job by not allowing oil to drain back from the top of the engine thereby reducing the amount of time it takes for oil to reach the lifters on a cold start. Compare that to the PF52 and that could be you answer. The PF52 has a good size ADBV compared to the Super Tech version. Most lifter noise asidde from wear can be attributed to a poor quality ADBV or non at all.

My car calls for a PF-47, but I use a UPF-52 instead. The UPF design seems a little restrictive to me, even though they claim it has excellent flow. I figure the more restrictive media and/or filter cartridge design is made up for the fact that it is a longer filter and should be able to flow more than the filter recommened for my car.

That said I do notice a little lifter noise at startup, but it is quickly squelched (within 15 seconds - at most) and then all I can hear is the obnoxious piston slap of my GM 3100.

Overall I'm happy with the UPF-52 on my car.

Judging a filter by its outside is like judging a book by its cover. I
have cut open 5 other filters listed as replacements for the AC PF
1177 and identical in size on the outside. Fhe Fram had 1/3 the filter
area of the AC with the ST and others grouped at 2/3 the area of the
AC. If you can find reasonably priced PF 52's use them. I have cut
them open too, and they do have more filter area than the smaller PF
47. It is messy, but you can easily cut used filters open and inspect for ADBV's and measure filter areea.
