Petro Canada 5w40 Duron worth another look

I don't see a lot of talk on this forum about Petro Canada's 5w40 Duron Synthetic. This group III synthetic used to be my winter oil of choice until I got my Cummins which required a CI-4 oil. At that time the 5w40 Duron was only rated CH-4. I sent an email to Petro Canada, asking when they would change to CI-4 and got this response:


Duron Synthetic meets all the high temp. and
physical properties of CI-4 and should very shortly display those
credentials in the API donut. Because of the great expense and time it takes
time to run the tests it was decided to have everything set and finalized
before running them.


Well that time has come and it looks like Petro Canada now meets the CI-4 and CI-4 plus ratings. Check it out at http://www.petrocanada.ca/eng/prodserv/lubesgreases/pdf/im7944e0412.pdf

This oil is an excellent alternative to Delvac 1, and should compare well to Esso's XD-3 0w40. I used ESSO 0w40 last winter, and I have enough for this winter, so I won't be switching back anytime soon,. especially now that Esso 0w40 is no longer a synthetic blend, and it has slightly better cold flow characteristics.

I like Petro Canada oils, and I just thought I would let people know that this oil is out there.

Hmm, a grp. III synthetic versus a full PAO (the XD-3) synthetic...tough choice. I guess it would come down to some used oil analysis to see which is the better oil.

Right, it is PAO- based now, not a blend. Do you know otherwise?

I recall the price being rather outrageous the last time I checked at the local truck stop. Maybe it's cheaper at the bulk stations?

Duron 5w40 used to be a great value. I used to get this oil for less than $20 per 4L jug at my local bulk dealer. Which was alot less then the $35 Wal-Mart wanted for a jug of Delvac 1. I have never seen good prices for oil at a truck stop, but I wouldn't be suprised if the price has increased over the last couple of years.

This oil was quite popular at one time over at TDIclub.com I had seen alot of good used oil analysis there.
