Nice!

I don't know that ClutchDisc is so concerned with fuel mileage as perhaps getting a little more low end grunt. The intake he has now is convoluted following a flattened duct on top of the radiator then a hard right back to the intake.

But that one pictured in his link is not a cold intake unless it gets shielded from the engine bay heat.

I don't think that will give you anything except a little more induction noise.

I would only put a Cold Air Intake on something with forced induction.

And certainly nothing as cheap and nasty as that.

Looks suspiciously like it has been Made in China probably out of recycled coke cans.

A decent CAI would be around £100/150 in the UK.

And that would be a custom kit made to fit the vehicle exactly and would have significant R&D budget behind it.

That kit looks Universal and would certainly not be a straight forward fit.

I wouldn't put something with disclaimers like keep your airbox so you don't fail the smog test.

Though if I was 22 I suspect I would fit one anyway!

The amount of gas you save will hardly pay for the device. JMO.
I'm not really looking to get it for gas mileage, looking for a little more power and just opening it up so it can breathe better. Any mpg gain would be an extra bonus.

Do it! After about 15k, toss the [censored] ebay filter and get a K&N or equivalent filter. Clean that every 15k.

Its cake to install on your S10

Your engine will make some nice noises with an open filter element

If there is one modification that any car should have, its a aftermarket intake. The noise, added power, better mpgs, and coolness of it are all a plus

Here is his engine bay. Notice how the filter is on right then routes through a wide flattened duct across top of fan shroud
just behind the radiator, then makes a hard turn back to the intake.

Go for it....everybody need the experience one time.

I did it on my '99 tacoma and sure, it sounds cool...I even believed I had more power and MPG for a while. It's still on there but, it's on my list of things to do to re-install the factory air box.

Generally speaking, the engineers put a lot of thought into the design of the intake tract.

This...

But go ahead and spend the couple of hundred bucks to find it out for yourself...

Since women buy cars too, and statistically they hate noise, car companies make quiet intakes and restrictive exhausts. There are gains but you wont see ROI in 300,000 miles. Intakes are usually smaller than oem assemblies and i add them to free up room underhood and they are easy to pull out completely when its a bigger project.

That engine started life in the 1982 J cars as a 1.8L with a carburetor.Later growing to 2.0 liters and gaining TBI,then going to 2.2L and MPI.So,thats a Cavalier (and Grumman LLV) engine. It replaced the Iron Duke 2.5 (it was no fireball either).

+1
There are some folks that have experimented with hot air intakes for MPG. And atleast on my Neon, the mileage gets better the hotter it is, and I seen intake air temps at 150-160F on a 90F day on my scangauge, and have gotten my best tanks averaging 38-39mpg.
Get a scangauge or equivalent and improve your mileage 10-20% just with watching what habits improve your mileage.

Like I said earlier not really getting this for mpg gain. Looking for a little power gain and just to open it up so it can breathe better.

That was my justification too.

In reality, i think i get better mpg on the open highway but, it's really much worse at certain rpms.

I have a wire type maf sensor which gets confused at certain rpms due to (heimholtz) resonances which, due to thoughtful engineers, were dampened out in the stock box.

It does sound great though.

the metal CIA's CRACK ME UP.. its a metal pipe under your hood.. even if the filter is inside the fenderwell, its still draggin cool air through a hot pipe !.. then, most of the time CAI'S piping is the same size or smaller than the factory oversized ductwork.

in my younger years i tried two different CIA's a expensive K&N setup that was plastic and the filter was inside the doghouse, and a metal Ebay specail that was $75 and was metal- crome with some china knock-off filter in the fenderwell.

they both made my stangs induction louder.. and thats it.. i noticed nothing else, no noticable MPG increase, no power increase (and as a matter of fact i did have my Mustang dyno'd) The only positive i experienced was the Metal CIA made a easy spot to drill into for my dry NOS system.. NOW that made a HP difference. I coulda tapped into my factory plumbing but the crome CIA looked much cooler when i was 25.

I have a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on it. It's great. Sounds great too!

Maybe having the muffler is good enough. Maybe I'm going overboard for a truck like this.

I think I will hold off for now, and just keep the idea in my back pocket.

I bought one of those eBay intakes for a 2002 S10 I had. It was a 4.3 V6 S10 however, put the intake on and the breather tube would not hook up so I kind of made it work. It was louder with the intake but not much else I could tell. After two days the welded bracket broke that held the air filter up. So I took it off and replaced it with the stock air box and tube. It was a waste of money to me and I still have it in my garage.
